Reports early Monday indicated that Paul Maholm would be headed to Chicago to join the Cubs, and he confirmed those rumors tonight via Twitter:

tweeted:

We don’t have word yet on terms of the deal. The Bucs turned down Maholm’s 2012 option worth $9.75 million after the season.

Paul will add some much-needed stability to the Cubbie rotation. Their current staff consists of Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells, Chris Volstad, and Travis Wood, so this may mean Theo Epstein is looking to trade another starter. Maholm will give them a slight boost and probably a full season’s worth of innings.

Of course, this means Paul will be returning to PNC Park plenty of times as an opponent. He may not be an enormous loss but fans should still appreciate what he did as a Pirate. Paul was the only one of the many first-round pitcher draft picks to actually (somewhat) pan out, and he pitched seven seasons and over 1100 innings as a Pirate. The Bucs have not had that kind of stability from many starting pitchers lately. Paul was also a great guy and member of the community during his time in Pittsburgh. Best of luck to him in Chicago, except for when he faces the Pirates.

In other former Pirate/free agent news: Ronny Cedeno signed with the Mets the other day. Good luck to him replacing Jose Reyes…stay thirsty, New York.
