Things were problematic enough for the Boston Red Sox with injuries this season, and now they may have to worry about Dustin Pedroia again.

The second baseman re-injured his right thumb Tuesday for the second time in three weeks and was taken out of the game after his at-bat in the seventh inning.

Pedroia was not available to talk with the media after Boston's 7-5 win over the Miami Marlins, so it will be an anxious few hours leading up to Wednesday's game to see if Pedroia will miss any playing time.

"He was more fearful than he was injured," manager Bobby Valentine said. "He thought it might have been a recurrence. We'll see how he is (Wednesday)."

The injury came on a foul ball off Pedroia's bat in the seventh.

The veteran has been wearing a guard around his right thumb after he suffered a partially torn adductor muscle. He missed six games before returning June 5.

The second baseman has played in 13 games since his return, and the thumb seems to be an issue. He's hitting just .170 (9-for-53) since his return, although he did go 1-for-3 with a double Tuesday.
