MLB Commissioner Bud Selig will allow Peter Rose to be involved in a Major League Baseball event on Sunday for the third time since the all-time hit king was banned in 1989. Rose was banned by then baseball commissioner Bart Giamatti for gambling on the Reds when he managed the team. Rose, a Cincinnati icon, will be honored at the Great American Ballpark by the Reds marking the 25th anniversary of Rose passing Ty Cobb as baseball’s all-time hit leader.
With Selig allowing Rose to be part of a Reds game for only the third time since his banishment I wonder if this is the beginning of Rose being reinstated? My guess is probably not. Selig has not lifted the ban on Rose since he took over in 1992 so I doubt he will do so any time soon. Possibly as Selig is nearing retirement he may lift the ban as his one last action as commissioner. However Selig was close friends with Giamatti so I don’t see him ever allowing Rose back into baseball. I don’t think Rose helped his situation by denying for years he gambled on baseball and then when he finally made a confession it was to promote his book “My Prison Without Bars.” Great that an admission was made by Rose but too little too late and he tarnished his image more by finally confessing to make money off his book.
Reds fans have always loved Rose much the same way Giants fans loved Barry Bonds. In their eyes the two can do no wrong. Selig probably wishes he could ban Bonds from baseball as well.
Should Pete Rose be reinstated and inducted into the Hall of Fame?
