Philly Buster:
Jose Contreras hasn’t pitched in a major league game in over a month, but he should be set to rejoin the Philadelphia Phillies tomorrow.
Contreras was on the DL with a flexor pronator strain of his right elbow, an issue that may have come from being overworked. Contreras pitched as the team’s seventh-inning man last year but moved into the closer role when Brad Lidge went on the DL.
Given the success Ryan Madson has had as the team’s closer in Contreras’ absence, Contreras will likely be used as an eighth-inning setup man. Madson is nine for nine in saves with an 0.47 ERA and looking like the best closer in the National League. Contreras had started the season five for five in saves with an 0.00 ERA in eight innings.
