The Philadelphia Phillies have placed closer Ryan Madson on the disabled list with a right hand contusion, a move that will be retroactive to June 19. The team has recalled right-handed pitcher Andrew Carpenter from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Carpenter has spent the last three seasons rotating between Triple-A and the major leagues, and he has accumulated just 9.2 innings pitched in the major leagues, during which he has put together a 1-1 record, 9.31 ERA, and 2.276 WHIP. Madson got his injury when he was hit on the hand by a batted ball against the Texas Rangers back on May 20, and he was officially diagnosed with inflammation in the small muscles in his right hand. Madson said he had difficulty gripping the ball on certain pitches. This season, Madson is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA in 31 games on the mound.
