The Philadelphia Phillies made a move today, signing recently-released Seattle Mariners slugger Jack Cust to a minor-league deal.
Cust batted just .213 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 225 at-bats for the Mariners this season, although he struck out a whopping 87 times. Cust led the AL in strikeouts three straight years from 2007-2009, although he did display enough power to average 28 home runs per year during those seasons.
The Phillies are hoping Cust can play the role of Matt Stairs, as a left-handed power bat off the bench. Cust plays left and right field, although he is probably best suited as a DH.
