The Philadelphia Phillies announced earlier today that they signed former Cy Young award winner Dontrelle Willis to a one-year deal. Willis was 1-6 with a 5.00 ERA last year for the Cincinnati Reds, as he continues his attempt to become the All-Star pitcher he was back in 2005. Willis is a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Phillies, as he held lefties to a .127 batting average last year. The Phillies may try to convert Willis into a reliever, and use his services along with Antonio Bastardo strictly against left-handed hitters.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A person familiar with the deal says the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to a one-year contract with lefty Dontrelle Willis. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Tuesday because the deal is pending a physical, says Willis will make about 1 million. The 30-year-old Willis was the 2003 NL Rookie of the Year with Florida...

Philadelphia Phillies Boggle Our Minds, Sign Dontrelle Willis to One-Year Deal

Monday's signing of Dontrelle Willis by the Philadelphia Phillies for one year, $1 million is a bit surprising. In fact, we don't see the point in it whatsoever. The 30-year-old lefty went 1-6 with a nice, round 5.00 ERA last season with the Cincinnati Reds, who saw just about enough of that. I mean, really. Willis is going to round out their pitching staff? It's like...

Phillies Take Low-Risk, Could Get Big Reward on Willis

Today, the Phillies officially announced the signing of well-traveled and charismatic lefty, Dontrelle Willis, to a one-year, $1M deal with incentives. While Willis has seen very little success as a starting pitcher over the last few years, the Phillies were the team that did the right thing by convincing him to make the full-time move to the bullpen. This is a tremendous low-cost...

Wednesday Morning Bench Coach

D-train Baby! During last season, I wrote this in the comment section about Dontrelle Willis:it's hard to believe that a pitcher that young and that good (and left handed) could fall so fast and stay down for so long. it is really quite a shame because he was a lot of fun to watch. and he could hit, too.he was one of my favorite players to watch for a year or two. i've been...

Catching the ‘D-Train’: Phils sign lefty Dontrelle Willis for relief

The Philadelphia Phillies plan to use pitcher Dontrelle Willis out of the bullpen next season, and based on his career statistics against left-handed batters, it figures to be a great idea. Reporter Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer said GM Ruben Amaro told reporters at the recent winter meetings that the Phillies were looking for relief help, and Willis would seem to be that...

As the Phils tender deals to their four arbitration eligible players, reports are coming out saying that they have signed a one-year deal with pitcher Dontrelle Willis.

The Phils have tendered contracts to the four players on the team who are still arbitration eligible after they had traded Ben Francisco to the Blue Jays: Cole Hamels, Hunter Pence, Kyle Kendrick and Wilson Vladez. Although it is expected that all four will receive an increase in salary whether they accept the proffered contracts, or go through arbitration, most of the fanbase would...
