Ty Wigginton and Carlos Ruiz homered to back Vance Worley and the Philadelphia Phillies held on for a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.
Worley (4-4) allowed three runs and six hits in six-plus innings. Michael Schwimer pitched out of a jam in the seventh, Antonio Bastardo worked the eighth and Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 18th save in 19 tries. Papelbon allowed a solo homer to Michael McKenry in the ninth.
Ruiz hammered an 0-2 pitch to deep left for his career-best 10th homer to give the Phillies an insurance run in the eighth. Ruiz, a career .265 hitter coming into the year, leads the majors with a .361 average after his 10th three-hit game.
Pirates starter Erik Bedard (4-8) gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings. Pittsburgh came in with the best record in the NL since May 25 at 18-10.
The Phillies have won two straight to climb out of last place, and the five-time defending NL East champion could have some help on the way.
Chase Utley was 2 for 5 with a homer in a game for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The five-time All-Star second baseman could make his season debut on Wednesday. He has missed the first three months because of chronic knee problems.
Meanwhile, former NL MVP Ryan Howard will start a rehab stint at Class A Lakewood on Thursday if all goes well with an examination on his left Achilles in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, the Pirates rallied against Worley. Clint Barmes walked and McKenry singled. Pinch-hitter Drew Sutton followed with an RBI double down the left-field line.
Schwimer entered and retired Jose Tabata on a sharp bouncer to the mound. Neil Walker lofted a fly ball to shallow left and John Mayberry Jr. nailed McKenry trying to score with a perfect one-hop throw to the plate.
The Pirates squandered another opportunity to tie it in the eighth after Andrew McCutchen led off with a double off Bastardo. Josh Harrison, pinch-hitting for cleanup hitter Garrett Jones, popped up a bunt that Ruiz ran down. Casey McGehee popped out and Pedro Alvarez struck out.
Wigginton gave Philadelphia a 4-1 lead in the third when he hit a two-run shot to left-center with two outs.
McGehee's two-out RBI single in the sixth got the Pirates within 4-2. McCutchen doubled and scored on the hit.
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Ruiz. Hunter Pence hit a triple off the scoreboard in right-center with two outs. Ruiz then hit a hard grounder to left on an 0-2 pitch.
Alvarez led off the second with a double, advanced to third on a grounder and scored on McKenry's sacrifice fly to tie it. Placido Polanco's two-out RBI single to left put the Phillies ahead 2-1 in the bottom half.
Worley escaped a first-and-second, no-out jam in the first, helping himself with an excellent defensive play. Worley charged off the mound, fielded Jones' slow roller and flipped the ball with his glove to Ruiz to retire Tabata trying to score.

Not even the return of Chase Utley could save the Phillies tonight, as the team fell to the Pirates 11-7 behind a hapless effort from the bullpen–a unit which has been the Achilles heel all season.

Enough can not be said about Carlos Ruiz’s performance so far this year. It has been nothing short of amazing that a 33 year old catcher has stepped up the way that he has. After another 3-4 night at the plate, Ruiz is batting .361. That is not only tops for catchers or in the National League, but is the best in all of baseball. Chew on that for a minute.
With Ruiz’s bomb of...
What a lift the Philadelphia Phillies got today with the return of Chase Utley. You could feel the excitement in the stadium before the game, when Utley took the field, when he was announced for his first at bat, then when he hit a monster home run to right field.
The excitement was in the air. The Phillies were back! Ryan Howard will be back inside of 20 days! The top of the National...

Well, at least the mask will keep people from recognizing him.

When superstars go on a rehab assignment, they usually get everything they want, including which jersey number they get to wear. It seems like that doesn't happen in Philadelphia. The Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs mascot FeRROUS wears Chase Utley's No. 26, so Utley now has to wear No. 21 for the first time in his career when he begins his rehab assignment with the Triple-A Iron...
After dropping both games of a day-night double-header yesterday, the Phillies were looking to shake off the rust and start off a four-game series with the Pirates on the right foot. Joe Blanton was looking for his seventh win on the season tonight, and would do so against Jeff Karstens.
Runs would be surprisingly easy to come by tonight for the Phillies. They can thank the Pirates...
The Phillies have elected to solve their bullpen problems tonight with Raul Valdes, a 34-year old reliever who's thrown 14 2/3 innings in 12 appearances in 2012. He'll likely be making an awfully short start tonight, which means that the Phillies will have to go pretty deep into their thin bullpen this evening. James McDonald is pitching for the Pirates. He's been one...

Vance Worley took the hill tonight for the Phillies against lefty Eric Bedard of the Pirates. With the team playing more aggressive than ever this season, the remainder of this series is sure to be entertaining.

The make-or-break homestand that was to determine where this team stood as June came to a close has not been pretty so far. After winning two of three from the Rockies, the Phillies took the momentum from a magical walk-off off the bat of Jim Thome and crushed by...
After a dreadful Sunday during which the Phillies lost two games to the Rays in spectacularly bad fashion, this team needed a break. And that break came in the form of the Pittsburgh Pirates. How do you spell relief? P-I-R-A-T-E-S!
The 8-3 win was a welcome sight, even if it did come at the expense of what appeared to be a little league team. Thankfully though, the Bucos took the...
Chase Utley homered in his first at-bat of the season, but the Pittsburgh Pirates spoiled his return by connecting three times and beating the Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 Wednesday night.
Michael McKenry hit a three-run homer and Andrew McCutchen and Casey McGehee also went deep for Pittsburgh.
Utley missed the first 76 games this year because of a chronic problem in both knees...
