Phillies Baseball is Upon us Again, And Pitching Still Worries Me

Posted March 26, 2008 on The_Electreon's Blog:
A mere couple stands between the Phillies and the season opener. The off-season action has been moderate, and the Phillies are set to jump into 2008 season. But the pitching staff still has me on edge. Yes Myers is going to be in the starting rotation, and yes Hamels is set to be a star in this league, but what about 3, 4, and 5 and the bullpen. Kyle Kendrick did a great job last year filling in when we were having injury problems, but he received huge run support in many of his games. This year in spring training he has struggled a great deal, and surrendered lots of runs. Jamie Moyer is a guy that you can only admire. He has met face to face with dinosaurs, and is still playing major league baseball. But sometime he is going to be spent. One of these days his arm is going to give out, and he won't be able to bounce back. I love the guy but his career is got to be nearing a close, and the Phillies need him to be a solid started. Adam Eaton. A name that caused much grief last year. People say the guy has stuff better than Peavey, but he has shown little to support that statement except on the occasional Mets game. This guy is coming off a bad year and surgery to top it off. In spring training he has even been having injury problems. Brad Lidge was our biggest off-season acquisition but came at a price (I want Bourn back!), and is still having injury problems to this day. He is going to miss the first couple games of the season, and who knows if his surgery's will linger. Another thing that bothers me is the whole bullpen roster. Madson is coming off shoulder problems, Gordon was anything from good at the beginning of last season, and even though Romero was superb last year it might have been a freak-year. Having said all that I hope my worries are unnecessary, and I hope the pitchers perform well. Kendrick my well be a solid starter in this league. Maybe Moyer still has some juice left in him. Maybe Eaton will come into his own this year and become a reliable starter. I hope so, but I don't know.
