Found August 01, 2012 on Philliedelphia:
Infielder Mike Fontenot was designated for assignment by the Phillies this afternoon. Meanwhile, Michael "Mini-Mart" Martinez has been called up from Triple-A Lehigh to replace his roster spot. Fontenot was signed to a minor-league deal back in April and was brought up to the big club back on May 14th. In 47 games with the Phillies, Fontenot hit .289 (29-for-97) with one home run and five RBI. Splitting time between third base and second base, Fontenot recorded five errors and most of them were game-deciding errors. Michael Martinez is being called up for the second time this season. Martinez was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh when Chase Utley made his season debut. In 16 games with the Phillies, Martinez hit .133 with a home run and four RBI. It seems that the Phillies are making this move due to the fielding aspect. Martinez has just two errors this season at second base. Follow Erik on Twitter @ErikSeyboldPHI.

Philadelphia Phillies deal Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino

The Philadelphia Phillies have begun the retooling process. It could hardly be called a rebuilding process following the six year, 144 million dollar extension they gave to Cole Hamels. For the time being, the Phillies have more than 90 million committed to their top three pitchers and Ryan Howard. The extension began wide speculation that the Phillies would begin to...

Amaro Says Phillies Have Room to Maneuver

Phillies GM Ruben Amaro joined Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio on Thursday, part of a carwash of interviews over the past 48 hours following the trade deadline. After the trades of Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence, Amaro is left answering questions about the future of the franchise. Amaro also joined Mike Missanelli of 97.5 the Fanatic on Wednesday and said he thinks...

Ruiz' Inspirational Story: How Chooch became an All-Star from humble beginnings

Carlos Ruiz debuted with the Phillies in 2006. He made his first All-Star Game in 2012. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) Carlos Ruiz used to be the lowest guy in the lineup, the guy who was unknown to the other 29 teams. Then came 2012, and with all of the injuries and struggles, Ruiz shined. He is unknown no more. As if Phillies fans needed another reason to love Chooch, Ruiz was...

Victorinos thank Phillies fans with ad

Shane Victorino may have driven some of us crazy time to time with his play, but the man is a true class act. He took out this full-page ad in tomorrow's Philadelphia Daily News. I'm shocked he got this out so fast. Bob Ventrone, Jr. shared the picture on his Facebook page that I noticed thanks to Phillies Beat Writer Kevin Cooney on Twitter. Speaking of Twitter, Shane...

Cliff Lee Placed On Waivers

Yahoo! Sports has announced today that Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee was placed on August waivers. August waivers in the MLB can be confusing, I am going to try my best to explain it.   Teams usually place several players on waivers come August.  Opposing teams are allowed to claim a player, but the team has the option of pulling him back and either make a trade with the claiming...

Phillies throw up white flag for 2012, expected, but still surprising

Say goodbye to 2012. Atlanta did that with a sweep of the Phillies this past weekend, and what dagger the Braves did, Phillies GM Ruben Amaro twisted inside the belly of Phillies fans. OK, gone are Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino. Coming in are outfielder Nate Schierholtz and minor-league prospects Tommy Joseph, a catcher, and Seth Rosin, a righthanded pitcher (from the Giants for...

Phillies Active at Deadline Moving Salary and Picking Up Bullpen Help

Reading the headline on the newyorkdailynews.com “It’s a fire sale in Philadelphia….”, is a reality we all should have seen coming. The “fire sale” at the trade deadline moved long time fan favorite Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence the one year fan favorite both to the West Coast. Victorino who in all likelihood would not have been re-signed next season did have a great...

Is Ruben Amaro wavering placing Cliff Lee on waivers?

The trading of Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence this week signaled that Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro came to grips with reality that the team needed an overhaul. But is he perhaps showing a little more fear than we'd like to see in today's decision to place starting pitcher Cliff Lee on waivers? Source: Phillies have placed Cliff Lee on waivers. Executives expect...

The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded two pitching prospects to the Phillies for Shane Victorino.
