The Philadelphia Phillies disappointing season continues as the team have now traded two of their starting outfielders ahead of the 4PM trade deadline today. The Phillies made two separate moves today involving Hunter Pence and Shane Victorino. Philadelphia traded Hunter Pence to the San Francisco Giants for Nate Schierholtz and two others. Nate Schierholtz had just recently requested a trade out of San Francisco and the Giants obliged. The Giants pressing need before the trade deadline was picking up an outfielder and they certainly upgraded with Pence. Pence is having a relatively down year (.271 BA, .336 OBP, .447 SLG) , but will help the Giants make that postseason push and try to stay ahead of the very busy Los Angeles Dodgers. Speaking of the very busy Dodgers, they made a move today to acquire Shane Victorino. The Dodgers gave up pitcher Josh Lindblom and minor leaguer Ethan Martin for the former All-Star. Victorino is expected to play left field for the Dodgers as Matt Kemp is the team's center fielder and Andre Ethier is not in danger of moving out of right field. Victorino is only hitting .261 this season but has 24 stolen bases as he returns to the team that drafted him in the sixth round in the 1999 MLB Draft. Dodgers GM Ned Colletti said of the acquisition of Victorino, "We're excited to add an All-Star caliber player with postseason experience. He plays the game with passion, gives us a top of the order bat from both sides of the plate, can steal bases and is solid defensively in the outfield." The Dodgers will not receive a draft pick as compensation if the free agent to be leaves in the offseason.
