The Philadelphia Phillies are 11 games into a 162 game schedule. They are 5-6, and truth is, from night to night, no one knows what to expect from them. Over the past couple of seasons, the Phillies’ offense has been pretty inconsistent. A lot of that offensive inconsistency has been covered up by an amazing group of pitchers. This year, so far, even the pitching hasn’t been enough.

Unless your name is Roy Halladay, that is…

Frankly, I’m tired of writing about what this team is or isn’t without Ryan Howard or Chase Utley in the lineup. I get the fact that it’s tough on a team to lose its top two stars, but in the end, there are 25 other guys on this team that are paid to hit for a living.

Hitting, generally hasn’t exactly been the problem, much to everyone’s surprise. In fact, the Phillies are hitting over 20 points higher than their opponents as a team (.259 vs .238). Overall, the Phillies are ranked 9th in MLB in batting average. Not terrible.

However the team is ranked 27th in runs, 24th in on base percentage and 24th in slugging. So what does all this tell us?

Pretty simple, really.

The Phillies are hitting a ton of singles. They can’t get extra base hits, and most importantly, they can’t get timely hitting out of anyone. When it comes to situational hitting or getting the clutch hit, the Phillies are coming up woefully short.

The Phillies also are averaging just 1.72 walks per game. Last year they averaged 3.32 walks per game. This team is certainly not being more patient at the plate. And they’re not situational hitting very well either.

All that talk of being more patient, having smart at bats and the changing of approaches, seems to be having a hard time sinking in during the early going.

There is time, and as I have said, if the Phillies can manage to hover around .500 until they can get some reinforcements, they could still be ok.
