As if starting the season at 7-10 wasn’t bad enough, word comes today that right fielder Hunter Pence will have to undergo a “precautionary” MRI on his left shoulder.

Pence injured the shoulder diving to make a catch on Sunday. Initially he felt fine, but when Monday morning came, he was in pain. The injury also appears to be limiting his range of motion.

Many thought that Hunter Pence would be an adequate replacement in the clean up spot in the batting order, however Pence has struggled so far this season, batting .258 with 2 HRs and 7 RBI through 16 games. That’s not really a large enough sample size to make any judgements, and let’s be fair, there is NO ONE in the lineup aside from Pence to concern any other pitchers. They don’t really HAVE to give him much to hit.

Nonetheless, Pence means a lot to this team and has been the only person who can even sniff some power these days. Pence missed last night’s game and may not be in there tonight.

At this point Ruben Amaro Jr. is saying the injury is not significant, and that the Phillies just want to be able to ascertain the level of damage in Pence’s shoulder.

The Phillies face the Arizona Cardinals again this evening at 9:40 PM.
