Kyle Kendrick starts the series opener against the Nationals. (Philliedelphia/Kevin Durso) For a season with so much turmoil and disappointment, today may be the high point of the season so far. The Phillies are in sole possession of third place for the first time since April 12, six games into the season. They are working on a month with a winning record, something they haven't done since May. But if they want to keep both of those going strong, they will have to beat a tough Nationals' team who has just found a way to win lately. The Nationals have lost six games in August, one to the Phillies on August 1, and haven't lost a series all month - if you don't count the Phillies winning two of three from the Nats in a series that started on July 31. That includes an eight-game winning streak in the middle of the month, and a recent series win against the Atlanta Braves. How are they doing it? A lot of it is luck, especially if you saw the way they won on Monday nig...

Kyle Kendrick pitched effectively for 6 2-3 innings and Jimmy Rollins drove in a pair of runs to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night. Kendrick (7-9), one of seven pitchers used by Philadelphia, allowed four hits and struck out three to help the Phillies win for the fifth time in the last seven games. Tyler Moore homered...

Phillies claim sole possession of third place in NL East

And so, the Nationals roll into Philly for a three game series this weekend. Hopefully Gio Gonzalez found some decent food options last night upon arrival. Oh, and congratulations to the Philadelphia Phillies, who nabbed sole possession of third place in the NL East for the first time since April with a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Reds in 11 innings last night. via Philadelphia...

Nationals' plan is now to have Strasburg skip starts

Nationals manager Davey Johnson, when speaking with the media before Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the Braves, said that Stephen Strasburg would probably miss somewhere around two or three starts in the final days of the season. The team has talked several times about shutting him down and limiting the right-hander to somewhere around 160-180 innings since this is his first full...

Philadelphia Phillies storyline: Redialing for 2013 magic

Phillippe Aumont made his debut in the majors for the Philadelphia Phillies Thursday, which clarified his potential.  Now, the red pinstripes are fun to watch again, but will they vie for the divisional crown next season? TAL’S HANDY CAPS   WELCOME, NEWCOMERS: I will publish after every game that is not washed out.  I will have many summer-long highlights of puzzle pieces, especially...

The Washington Nationals bullpen reads "50 Shades Of Grey" (Video)

If you looking for something to make your weekend just a little bit more interesting, check out this clip from the folks over at the MLB Fan Cave which features members of the Washington Nationals bullpen reading, "50 Shades Of Grey". So, watch as Sean Burnett/Ryan Mattheus/Craig Stammen and Tyler Clippard read some excerpts from the best-selling piece of erotic fiction:

Bryce Harper dropped two s-bombs in his postgame interview last night

Oh, well, Nats dropped a tough one last night to the Braves on Chipper Jones Appreciation Night at Nationals Park. No sweep, no worries? Well, at the very least nobody got hurt (especially Ian Desmond and his hammy). Meanwhile, Bryce Harper achieved another Big League first last night: He swore not once, but twice in his postgame interview. Two s-bombs for Harper! In the video...

Asche Shines as Reading’s Other Star

In the midst of a playoff race, talented first-year pro Cody Asche is shining in the shadow of a dominating figure. If not for the scorching hot bat of first baseman/outfielder Darin Ruf, the focus of fans and media members might be fully centered on the Phillies’ 4th round draft selection from last summer. Asche, who typically bats second in the Double-A Reading Phillies’...

Nats Talk On The Go: Episode 32

It was a busy week for the Washington Nationals on a lot of fronts. Lucas Giolito, the Nats top pick in the 2012 draft, is having Tommy John surgery. Stephen Strasburg, despite his shutdown, should be a Cy Young contender. The Nationals don't want to pay for the Metro when the game runs long, and the Braves extra inning game was a fun one. Finally, we talk about some former Nats greats.

Phillies - Reds: When You Can't Say Yes And You Can't Say No

The Five Tool Ninja (yes, he exists, from the ancient days of the blog, back when others would write) and I went to the Phillies-Reds game tonight in Philly. He's home for the week sans kids, and I'm at that magical place of the summer where you look at your kids and fantasize about breaking into the school and locking them there for six hours, just to get them out of...

Nats Head To Philly As Division Leaders

The Washington Nationals (77-47) head north to face the Philadelphia Phillies (58-67) in the final game at Nationals Park North, er... Citizens Bank Park, this season. It's a three-game series that has much more value to the Nats than the Phils, as the Atlanta Braves, the Nats only competition for the NL East title, take on a very good San Francisco Giants team out west.  Pitching...

Pregame: Cy Young Match Up between Hamels and Cueto

I think there is a Cy Young winner in the house tonight. Is it the home team's staff ace, Cole Hamels (14-6/IP-171.1 /ERA-2.94/K-168/BB-42/WHIP-1.11)? Is it his opponent Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto (16-6/IP-169.2/ERA-2.44/K-135/BB-37/WHIP-1.13)? Personally if I had a vote, it would have to go to Reds closer Aroldis Chapman. How does anyone get a hit off this guy? Without a...
