Yuniesky Betancourt had an option in his contract with the Philadelphia Phillies that if he was not going to make the 25 man roster, he would be notified by March 25 and could ask for his release. Betancourt was released after today’s Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox at Bright House Field. The move is a mistake for the Phillies who will likely count on Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen to be the team’s utility infielders barring a trade or or signing.
Betancourt had an outstanding spring for the Phillies. He hit .447 with a homerun and 14 RBI’s in 51 plate appearances in 17 games. He made several spectacular plays in the field and in a small sample showed that he can still contribute at the major league level.
Allowing Betancourt to leave makes no sense for the Phillies. If they kept him on the roster, they could option Freddy Galvis who could get regular at bats at Triple A and continue to improve his hitting as opposed to the limited playing time he will get in Phi...
BEST OF MAXIM
Despite a superb spring, Yuniesky Betancourt has been released. In his contract, March 24th was designated as the deadline for the Phillies to either keep him on the big league roster or let him go. They chose to let him go even after Betancourt hit .447 with 14 RBI with 3 doubles and a home run in 47 at-bats.
This means that both Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen will make the team...
Chase Utley went deep twice, while Yuniesky Betancourt, Domonic Brown, and Ryan Howard chipped in with a long ball of their own as the Phillies move to 13-13 in Grapefruit League action with a 13-4 win.
Yes, the Phillies faced Bruce Chen. And sometimes it is hard to remember that Bruce Chen was almost as valuable to the Royals in the last two seasons as Kyle Kendrick and...
On March 8, the Phillies signed Matt Hitt, a 23-year old catcher who led Eastern Michigan University in home runs in 2012. Hitt went undrafted but played professionally with the Arizona Centennials last summer. Hitt comes to the Phillies organization with a reputation for plus defense and the ability to hit for power.
Signed on March 8, Hitt will likely play along side...
PitchersPhillies veteran pitcher Roy Halladay has come to the realization that he’s got to reinvent himself as a Major League hurler. On Saturday he pitched against some minor leaguers and he was not even close to being impressive.
His fastball was between 85 and 89 miles per hour. He did reach 90mph on one pitch, but [...](Read more...)

Carlos Ruiz was struck in his left hand last night in the 9th inning against the Boston Red Sox. According to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com, X-rays came back negative and Ruiz feels “fine.” Of course, Ruiz is suspended for the first 25 games of the year after failing a drug test. This spring...
The Philadelphia Phillies are down to only a few questions on Domonic Brown. However, there are two spots open until Delmon Young returns.

Frank Klose of Philliedelphia created this goodie. Well, this is getting easier to figure out, even if it doesn't make much sense. Ruf got optioned, as did Jermaine Mitchell. Rodrigo Lopez got released. The Phillies are looking to make moves. So with that stuff all known, here's the latest roster...
The Phillies certainly won in dramatic fashion yesterday with Darin Ruf's walkoff home run over Atlanta. Coincidentally, Ruf was informed that he was being optioned to AAA after the game. Ruf hit .246 (14-for-57) with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBIs in 19 Grapefruit League games, but his...

Million Dollar Sleeper: The state of the fantasy baseball world is in a state of chaos. False prophets who preach the religion of Sabermetrics are running amok.
