MLB Injury News:
Philadelphia Phillies reliever Mike Adams was already unlikely to pitch this season but now it seems he has finally decided to undergo surgery instead of trying to rehab his labrum & rotator cuff injuries. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel mentioned that Adams would undergo a procedure when talking to MLB Network Radio on Wednesday.
Manuel on Mike Adams: "We'll see how the procedure goes, may be tough for him to come back this year"
— MLB Network Radio (@MLBNetworkRadio) July 3, 2013
Last month, Adams went on the DL for the second time this season with biceps tendinitis. It became clear that wasn't his only problem as news emerged that he might require labrum surgery just a few days later. Although he elected to try rehab instead, that obviously was not working as news of this surgery comes just a week later. The 34-year-old right-hander went under the knife less than a year ago when he underwent a procedure to correct his thoracic outlet syndrome.
The Phillies are currently third in the NL West but sit 9.5 games back of the division-leading Atlanta Braves and are also 8 games behind the Cincinnati Reds in the wild card race. They have the second-worst bullpen ERA & WHIP in baseball this year (4.53 & 1.495) with the worst strikeout-walk ratio (1.96), so Adams' loss is a real blow to an already weakened area of their team.

If Amaro doesn’t change his tune, his insistence that this aging core is worth holding onto will be his downfall.
Back in March, I disagreed with the notion that the Phillies roster needed detonation, as was then being advocated by Jonah Keri of Grantland.com. I thought there were too many pieces still in place to have that outlook going into 2013… that this veteran group had...

As the Philadelphia Phillies are slumping this season, one thing that has not been slumping is their farm system. The Phillies farm system has been making some noise this season from Jesse Biddle in Reading to Andrew Knapp in Williamsport. But one player who has been getting a lot...
Despite their disappointing start to the season, the Los

an effort to do so, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Dodgers could target

The Phillies have done themselves no favors during the first half of the season. Their mediocre play has left them in 3rd place in the NL East and 9.5 games out of first. Losing 3 out of 4 against the Dodgers this past weekend did not help their case either.
And so the rumor mill begins to turn with names like Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon in the mix...

The Philadelphia Phillies did not have Ryan Howard in the starting lineup last night. His knee has been bothering him, so manager Charlie Manuel decided to give Howard a day off. This isn't the first time Howard has been given rest due to his knee. He missed time last weekend because the knee was bothering him.
According to George Von Benko of MLB.com, Howard played...
After falling behind three runs, Phillies nearly came back to tie it in the sixth and again in the ninth, but fell short with a 6-5 defeat. John Lannan struggled over the five innings he pitched, scattering 11 hits and allowing four runs. Three of the runs came off a Pedro Alvarez home run in the fifth. Domonic Brown had three hits, including a two run home run that nearly...

A three run sixth and a strong combined effort from the starting pitching and relief helped the Phils to the win after a rough weekend in Los Angeles.

The Philadelphia Phillies offense was silent but waited for their moment against Pittsburgh Pirates emergency starter Brandon Cumpton Tuesday night. The Phillies picked up three runs in the sixth inning to chase Cumpton from the game and the young bullpen came through to get the game from starter Jonathan Pettibone to Jonathan Papelbon to pick up a 3-1 victory in PNC Park.

Count Jonathan Papelbon among the Yasiel Puig haters.
Puig has taken the majors by storm since breaking into the Dodgers lineup on June 3, prompting many to trumpet his All-Star candidacy. Papelbon, frankly, thinks all this talk is ridiculous .
