As has become the pattern for the New York Mets, atrocious pitching from starters and relievers alike, and bone-headed mis-haps in the field and on the basepaths led to yet another pitiful loss for the not-so Amazin’s. Matching a season low 8-games under .500, the Mets have now dropped an abysmal 17 of their last 22, putting them only a mere 3 games above the last place Marlins.
What set the tone for this ballgame came in the top of the 1st, when with runners at the corners and no outs, David Wright grounded one to third that Placido Polanco went home with, throwing out Angel Pagan who did not slide or run Brian Schnieder over, but merely tip-toed into the backstop, or as Keith Hernandez said “played patty-cake.” Phillies starter Vance Worley would escape the inning without surrendering a run.
In the next frame, the Mets had 2nd and 3rd and no outs and watched in amazement as their next three batters struck out looking to end the threat.
On the other hand, the Phillies unfortunately were able to capitalize on their opportunities to get to Jon Niese, all starting with a solo shot by Shane
Victorino in the bottom of the third. Niese seemed to lose his composure after the home run as he would allow three of the next four batters to reach base capped off by a John Mayberry Jr, three-run bomb to give Philadelphia a comfortable 4-0 lead.
After surrendering a run in the 4th, Niese’s night just continued to crumble. The 24-year old southpaw was relieved by Pedro Beato after loading the bases with no one out, but Beato was not much of an improvement to Niese’s poor outing, surrendering all of his inherited runners and one run of his own to put the Mets at an insurmountable 9-0 deficit.
In the bottom of the 7th, the Mets scored their first run of the series on a Justin Turner RBI groundout, too little too late for the Mets in this one as they would go on to drop this one 9-4.
One of the few bright spots from this game was Lucas Duda, who crancked his 7th home run of the season tonight, Justin Turner also had a pair of doubles and Nick Evans had a double and a triple in this evening’s contest.
This was just a terrible game to watch as the division rival Phillies carved up the Mets in every fashion. The Amazin’s will look to avoid the sweep and also try to avert dropping their 6th in a row as they hand Mike Pelfrey the ball to square off against Kyle Kendrick.
*NOTES-
-To add insult to injury, or in this case injury to insult, both Jon Niese and Scott Hairston are likely headed to the 15-day DL with rib-cage injuries.
