The Philadelphia Phillies continue to make a splash this off season, this time locking up Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon. Papelbon will replace Ryan Madson and Brad Lidge in the Phillies bullpen.
Papelbon will receive $50MM over 4 years, along with a vesting option. While the dollar amount might seem high, Papelbon has been one of the top closers in the last couple of years. He’s averaged 31 saves per season over the last 7 seasons, while having a WAR of 15.9.
The Phillies attempted to re-sign former closer Ryan Madson, but the talks stalled at $44MM over 4 years.
This move follows the Phillies recent MO – strike early and big. They committed $25MM per season to Ryan Howard before he hit free agency.
