Kline
Looks like the Phillies have found their second lefty reliever: they signed veteran left-hander Steve Kline to a minor league contract today. Kline, who was released by the San Francisco Giants in early April, is an 11 year veteran who has played with five different teams. He is coming off a mediocre season where he saw his strikeout rates take a dive and his ERA rise up to 4.70. He is a LOOGY, (Lefty One Out GuY) even though he wasn't particularly good against lefties last year. Kline represents a great low-risk signing. It's the perfect kind of deal for Phils GM Pat "Small Splashes" Gillick. Kline will start out in the minors, and if he can get the job done, he will quickly move up to the big club. If he struggles, then he stays in the minors or the Phillies simply cut bait. These are the types of small moves that don't win championships, but they do build depth and fill holes. Hopefully Kline gets to the majors quickly and Clay Condrey can go back to AAA ...

  • A whatever move thay will only help if they make a playoff run.
  • He'll be the situational lefty in the 'pen by May. JC Romero the only lefty in the bullpen now is used for multiple batters because dude gets everyone out.
  • Sounds good to me. Romero has gone way beyond situational lefty so it was important they brought in someone for that role. The only thing that disturbs me is that Kline isn't that good against lefties anymore

  • ERA's of two other relievers that were supposedly washed up: Rudy Seanez 0.00, J.C. Romero 0.00
  • Every team has guys like these who succeed when put in the right situation. Would you rather have Mesa and Alfonseca back?

  • give Seanez some time...he'll F up. As for Romero...he was never put in the "washed up" category, but rather the "can't get it done" category. He was always thought to have a world of talent, just unable to live up to it.

  • When he was released by Boston...before Philly picked him up. Change of scenery did him good.

  • I personally hate Pat Gillick...he loves signing washed up pitchers to throw into our bullpen. This coming after he repeatedly said we weren't going to go after Kline whether he was released or not. You guys might want to note that Michael Bourn is off to a great start this year with 6 SBs
  • Pretty sure Gillick will never let anyone know who he's going after. That would just lead to other teams driving up the price
  • Kline never had a "price" It was widely known that the Giants were going to release him, expressing interest would have done nothing. The only team we'd have to worry about competing with us for a player is New York, and Kline's not hispanic so Omar wouldn't sign him anyway.
  • I dislike Patty G too, but at least he's realizes his mistake (this pitching staff) and trying to render the situation (Kline and Seanez signings).
  • Has anyone seen Kyle Lohse's Stats????

    1-0 in 2 games... 12 innings piched. 5 Strike outs ERA 0.00

we could have myers in the BP (not doing well in the rotation) , and still have our top prospect (Costanza 3B)

instead we have mysers starting 0-2 and Lidge in the BP
  • Well theres 2 problems with Lohse...

    1. He's not worth 4.2 million. They had other areas they needed the money for (Howard/Romero, etc.)
    2. He's represented by Boras...nobody wants to negotiate with him

I know you'll counter with "well Eaton makes 8 million blah blah blah" and that was a dumb move on their part and they probably realized it and weren't going to make the same mistake twice.

  • And who wants to deal with Boras? Nobody. They didn't feel they needed another starter, especially another lefthander.

  • Inseason, Gillick is decent at making moves (aside from the Abrue trade diaster). Offseason he sucks donkey dong.

  • Yeah, I agree with what booger said, plus the Abreu trade was just to unload a bunch of $$.
  • By the way, why do you guys have a problem with us trying to pick up a left reliever that could help us? We signed him around league minimum to a minor league contract... it's a classic low risk / high reward situation. If he doesn't pan out, we lose nothing. If he does well we get a hell of a lot of value for nothing. It's not exactly a high profile signing that gets you excited, but it has a possibility of helping the team.
  • I agree PhillyFan. What's the harm in taking a flyer on the guy? If it doesn't pan out, they didn't pay much anyway!
  • I'm all for the Kline signing. If he doesn't pan out so what. If he proves to be worthwhile for the 'pen, then awesome!
  • I thought Seanez was garbage (and he still might be) when we signed him, but look at how well he has done so far.........
  • Why don't we just bring back Alfonseca? I'm sure that 6th finger could help us down the line...

  • According to RotoWorld, we might be interested in Kyle Snyder... I'm not saying it's a big interest, but certainly a possibility. Looks like Boston is about to release him, and we've had success finding treasure from their trash before (Romero). This guy is frickin 6'8'' lol. I wouldn't mind them taking a flyer on this guy too. Seemed to have a decent year last year. Looks like he was a (bad) starter converted to the pen.
