Phillies-polanco-bats
The Phillies won the second game of their series with the Rockies, not by a nose or even by the hair of their chins; they won by a toe. It was Todd Helton’s toe, to be exact. In the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, the bases loaded and a tie game, Placido Polanco stepped to the plate. He hit a bouncing grounder to short that looked like it might end the game. It did end the game, just not in the way you might expect. Polanco hustled down the line and, for some unknown reason, veteran Todd Helton suddenly forgot how to play first base. He had the wrong foot back towards the bag and had to juggle his feet around. As a result, his foot was not on the bag by about a toe length when Polanco crossed. Polanco was safe, the runner on 3rd scored and the Phillies won in walk-off fashion. I am so grateful to Helton’s toe that I decided to write a short poem about it: Ode to the Toe Oh, to the toe Many thanks must go Trying to save face You danced around the base Giving Polanco plenty of time To ...

Troy Tulowitzki to have groin surgery

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki will have surgery on his left groin area on Thursday and it's unknown when he'll return. Tulowitzki was injured May 30 against Houston, pulling up after running out an infield grounder. The All-Star shortstop took himself out of a game last Wednesday at Triple-A Colorado Springs after feeling not quite right. Rockies manager Jim...

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES HIT THE FASHION RUNWAY

Earlier this week, the Philadelphia Phillies took a break from baseball action in favor of fashion for a good cause. In support of Phillies center fielder, Shane Victorino, teammates including Cole Hamels, Jonathan Papelbon, Ty Wiggington, John Mayberry Jr., Hunter Pence, Jimmy Rollins and Kyle Kendrick traded their uniforms for designer duds in the 3rd Annual Shane Victorino Phillies...

Jeremy Guthrie Bucks the Trend

The Colorado Rockies starting rotation has been awful at preventing runs this season. Their collective 5.38 ERA and 4.56 FIP are easily National League worsts, and their walk and home run rates rank at or near the bottom as well. Pitching in Coors Field plays a big part in their performance — as their much improved 3.90 SIERA and 4.10 xFIP indicate — but overall, starting pitching...

Manufactured Runs: Does the Rockies' Four-Man Rotation Make Sense? by Colin Wyers

Well here’s something you don’t see every day—the Rockies are going to a four-man rotation. And what’s more, they’re going to put their four starters on a 75-pitch limit. Jim Tracy explained his decision like so: "I felt we had to do something non-conventional," said Tracy of his beleaguered pitching staff that includes a reliever Josh Roenicke who has thrown...

Is Blanton Throwing Too Many Strikes?

Blanton is struggling once again (AP) “If you want to know the truth, you can never throw too many strikes,” said Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel after I asked him if Blanton was hitting the zone a little too frequently. “I think it’s where you put the ball…it comes back to location, location, location.” So, Manuel wouldn’t completely concede that Blanton was throwing...

Hamels takes deep breath, then blows away Rockies

During his last four starts, Cole Hamels often looked like an agitated pitcher who seemed a little bit out of sorts. So in the second inning on Tuesday night -- after the left-hander walked opposing pitcher Josh Outman with one out -- there was a sense that it was happening again. At that point, Hamels retreated from the mound and visibly took a deep breath. "You learn...

Fantasy Baseball Daily Fix, June 21, 2012: Tulowitzki gets bad news, needs surgery

William Goldman is a Hollywood screenwriter, who famously wrote in his memoir “Adventures in the Screen Trade,” that “nobody knows anything.” Aside from his movies – “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Princess Bride,” “Misery,” - this quote may be his most enduring legacy. What Goldman was referring to, was the often unexplainable and unpredictable...
