For three all-too-brief at-bats, it seemed as if the Mets had regained that Amazin' magic that had catapulted them to the best record in the National League last month. The Mets broke out of their power slump in a big way last night in the sixth, as Carlos Delgado, David Wright, and Paul Lo Duca slammed Phillies ace Cole Hamels for back-to-back-to-back home runs.
But on a night when the team's bats seemed as if they may finally be awakening, the bullpen continued to be unusually unreliable. After Pedro Feliciano and Aaron Heilman took turns wearing goat horns in the first two games of the series, Billy Wagner chose an exceedingly poor time to blow his first save of the season.
The win for Philadelphia completed a three-game sweep of the Mets at Shea Stadium. The Phillies entered the series 8-games back of the division-leading Mets, but have now cut the gap to just five.
