The Phillies have finally given up on Greg "Toolsy" Golson, trading him to the Texas Rangers for outfielder John Mayberry Jr. Both players are former first round picks who are about the same age and have similar potential, so the trade essentially boils down to the Phillies trading Golson's speed for Mayberry's power.Mayberry is 24 and spent last season in Double-A and Triple-A. Mayberry has never played a game in the majors but he has shown his power in the minors. Baseball Prospectus isn't all that impressed with him, noting that he has a lot of "raw power" but he doesn't have much skill at the plate. His father, also named John Mayberry, played several years in the majors from the late 60's to the early 80's and hit 255 homers in 15 seasons. If the son ends up anything like the father, the Phils will love this deal.Giving up Golson isn't too big of a loss...... Click the link for more trade analysis.....

  • What a stupid, stupid trade. Golson's 23...nowhere near time for them to give up on him. He was never going to hit .330 or hit a lot of home runs but .280-.300 was realistic and a few gold gloves were imminent. Not to mention 50+ SB's. We have enough power on this team, we have no speed.
  • With Vic in center for the foreseeable future, Golson wasn't gonna play anyway. He's got speed but he's terrible with the bat!
  • Tommy said it perfectly below...he was a great bargaining chip that we've lost. Nobody is going to want Mayberry like they wanted Golson. And we have a need for a 4th outfielder in the foreseeable future...actually we have that need right now, but he wasn't ready. His bat isn't terrible, I've seen him in Clearwater, Lakewood, Reading, and Lehigh...consistency is what he lacks.
  • what was the point of this? very dumb trade... we could of packaged golson..
  • This trade does seem rather pointless!!!
  • bats right and throws right... riiiight
  • i did like golson, but hey lets see how this trade works out. Remember when we all though michael bourn was suppose to be a great player for the franchise and now look at him in Houston he hit a tad over 200 so lets give this mayberry guy a chance
  • Exactly, Golson is just another Bourn except he can't even hit as well as Bourn
