Backup catcher Michael McKenry had the first two-homer game of his four-year major league career and Starling Marte hit a tiebreaking two-run drive in a six-run eighth inning Sunday, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates rally from a five-run deficit for a 10-7 win over the Cincinnati Reds.
Cincinnati has lost five straight, its longest slide since last Aug. 5-9. The Pirates swept the Reds for the first time since April 16-18, 2010, in Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh trailed 5-0 when McKenry homered off Mat Latos leading off the seventh. Travis Snider's RBI double off the top of the right-field wall - upheld after a video review - chased Latos, Andrew McCutchen doubled in a run against Logan Ondrusek and pinch-hitter Gaby Sanchez had an RBI single off Manny Parra.
Jack Hannahan's pinch RBI single off Jared Hughes (1-0) boosted Cincinnati's lead to 6-4 in the eighth, but Jonathan Broxton (0-1) walked Pedro Alvarez leading off the bottom half and McKenry's second homer tied it. Jose Tabata walked with one out, and Marte's first home run of the season gave the Pirates an 8-6 lead.
Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez pinch hit for Hughes and reached on Broxton's third walk of the inning and scored on Gaby Sanchez's sacrifice fly. Neil Walker added an RBI single.
Pittsburgh's three homers doubled its total this season. The Pirates have scored 32 runs during a 5-1 spurt after scoring eight in a 1-5 start.
The two homers and six runs allowed tied career highs for Broxton, a nine-year veteran.
Walker had three hits for Pittsburgh, while Snider hit two doubles and Marte and McCutchen had two hits each.
Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips drove in three runs on a pair of singles, a day after attending his grandfather's funeral.
Cincinnati's Shin-Soo Choo had two hits and has reached base in all 12 games this season. Todd Frazier broke an 0-for-16 slump with a third-inning single and Chris Heisey ended a string of 14 hitless at-bats with a single in the second.
The Reds' Joey Votto led off the ninth with his first home run since June 24. He also drew three walks.
Pirates starter Phil Irwin had a rocky major-league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis before the game to replace left-hander Wandy Rodriguez, who straining his left hamstring Monday.
A 21st-round draft pick from the University of Mississippi in 2009, Irwin allowed five runs - four earned - six hits and four walks in 4 2-3 innings while striking out four.
Latos gave up three runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. He is 4-0 with a 2.55 ERA in 10 starts dating to August and has 48 strikeouts in 45 innings during seven career starts against the Pirates.

As expected, the Pirates sent Phil Irwin back to Triple-A after yesterday’s spot start. I would not be surprised to see him back (and would still prefer him over Jonathan Sanchez, probably), but Irwin could probably benefit from some more time in the...
So if you were on Twitter during the game, you saw this. If not, here’s the story of what really led to the Pirates comeback today. James Santelli has been working on a Garrett Jones article this week, which took a lot of research and time to put together. Joey Votto did something on Sunday in which he hadn't done since June 24, 2012: he hit a home run.
The long drought came to an end in the ninth inning as Votto belted a bomb well over the center field wall at PNC Park. As you can see, it was a no doubter.
Votto missed nearly two months during the middle of last season as he recovered...

This one started and ended with James McDonald. What an absolutely horrible performance. The Cardinals obliterated J-Mac, who looked absolutely helpless out on the mound against a team he dominated last season. The Pirates ended up having a pretty decent day at the plate but it didn’t matter.
Thanks to some bad St. Louis baserunning and a couple hard-hit balls right at people,...
The Reds have released the following statement regarding the tragedy that occurred near the end of the Boston Marathon on Monday as it pertains to security at Great American Ball Park.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and friends affected by this afternoon’s events in Boston. While we won’t comment specifically on security procedures at...
The Reds received a scare when Johnny Cueto was placed on the disabled list with a strained lat muscle. As he returned to Cincinnati for further testing yesterday, the minor leagues’ hottest pitcher took the mound in Louisville awaiting to hear whether he would replace Cincinnati’s ace. In three Triple-A starts, Tony Cingrani destroyed the International League: he struck out...

The Bucs look to build off last night’s exciting win and take the series tonight against the hated Redlegs. These teams meet a total of 19 times over the course of the year, but an early series win would be big for the Bucs’ confidence. They’ve won 3 of the last 4 and it would be great...
Today the Cincinnati Reds had to place starting pitcher Johnny Cueto on the 15-day disabled list. The injury is being identified as a lat strain and has been known to sideline pitchers for more than a month. He injured himself against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday.

Broxton barely looks as Starling Marte jacks a homerun to take the lead for good.
Yesterday we gave Dusty Baker a hard time for going to JJ Hoover constantly despite his plus 6 ERA. Well apparently we can no longer blame him as seemingly everyone in their bullpen is pitching awful. Frankly, this should be a team award for giving up 10 runs to the Pirates in the 7th and 8th...
We had ourselves a pitcher's duel tonight on this Jackie Robinson Day in Cincinnati between Cliff Lee and Bronson Arroyo. (.Gif file courtesy of Eliot on Twitter) Lee, backed by some stellar offense in center field (and possibly the best play of the year), was dominating the Reds tonight. The...
