Jeff Locke pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Gaby Sanchez homered off Cole Hamels to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Tuesday night. Locke (2-1) struck out six and walked two. After wriggling out of a jam in the fourth, he retired his last eight batters - striking out three of the final four. Sanchez also doubled and Brandon Inge had an RBI double in his Pirates debut to help Pittsburgh win for the fifth time in seven games. After opening the season with a pair of poor outings, Hamels (0-3) pitched well for the third straight start but was hurt by a lack of run support again. In eight innings, the left-hander gave up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Philadelphia, which has scored three runs or fewer in 13 of its 21 games, managed just four hits and had 11 strikeouts against Locke and three relievers. Michael Young extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an eighth-inning single for the Phillies, who were shut ou...

Pirates Shut Out Phillies 2-0 as Pitching Continues to Thrive

If Jeff Locke was pitching to save his spot in the rotation… he is well on his way. Jeff Locke kept the Phillies scoreless for six innings. Locke put together the best start of his brief Major League career Tuesday night to tack on another outing to a strong run of Pirates’ pitching. After some early hiccups, Locke recorded outs on the last eight hitters he faced, then turned...

Hamels Tough Luck Loser, Phillies Bats in Locke-down

In what was one of the more miserable games of the season, the Phillies fell to the Pirates, 2-0. Hamels Moves to 0-3: -Just call it the Curse of Cliff. When your starting pitcher throws well enough that he should have a victory. Cole was pretty much on his game from the start, except for mistakes to Brandon Inge and Gaby Sanchez that hurt him. Hamels has gotten better every start...

Phillies Offense on Locke-Down

On Monday night, Phillies rookie Jonathan Pettibone made his major league debut against the Pirates. He went 5.1 innings and allowed only 2 runs after a fairly shaky start and some good defense. The Phillies offense put up 3 runs for the rookie, but two of those runs came from a wild pitch and a hit batter. The lack of offense took another turn for the worse on Tuesday night. Cole...

Cole Hamels Aims For First Win As Phils Face Jeff Locke, Pirates

Last night was a good example of how small ball can produce wins. The Phillies used the runners on base to score and it worked out. It would have been nicer if they had gotten a couple more runs, but a win is a win. Jonathan Pettibone debuted last night...

The Phils’ offense wasted Cole Hamels’ third straight quality start as the Phils are shutout by the Bucos, losing 2-0.

The Phils’ offense wasted yet another good performance by Cole Hamels as they dropped one to the Pirates, 2-0. The Pirates broke up a 0-0 pitchers’ due in the top of the fourth as, with a runner on first, and with nobody out, Brandon Inge hits an RBI double, knocking in Neil Walker, who had started the inning off with a single, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The Pirates would...

Full Box Score The Phillies were shut out for the fourth time this year losing Tuesday night to the Pirates 2-0.  In perspective, the Phillies were only shut seven times all of 2012.  Cole Hamels pitched 8 strong innings allowing 2 runs while striking out 6 and walking only 1 batter.  Hamels’ counterpart, left-hander Jeff Locke pitched 6 shutout innings of 2 hit baseball...

Hamels locked in, bats Locke-d down in loss to Bucs

Cole Hamels looks on after Gaby Sanchez' eighth-inning home run. If the Phillies are going to win, they need to hit. As Charlie Manuel said after a 5-0 loss to the Cardinals on Saturday, Ryan Howard has to hit, Chase Utley has to hit and Jimmy Rollins has to hit....

Pirates 6, Phillies 4

Gaby Sanchez homered and drove in three runs, and Garrett Jones hit a go-ahead, two-run double to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 comeback victory over the struggling Philadelphia Phillies. Justin Wilson (2-0) pitched two hitless innings in relief of James McDonald and the Pirates, won their third straight and 10th in of 13 games. Taking the four-game series gave Pittsburgh...

Pettibone, Biddle, and Ranking the Young Arms

So Jon Pettibone threw really well last night for a big league debut, which doesn't shock me. Sometimes a good debut means you're a future Cole Hamels, sometimes it means you're Carlton Loewer. You shouldn't get overly excited, or totally dismissive, because he did pitch good, but lots of young...

The Rubber, Week Four: What to Watch with Underperforming Starters

Source: Rob Carr/Getty Images North America David Price, Matt Cain, Cole Hamels and Gio Gonzalez all had ADPs of 40 or higher, but they all currently have a negative player rater number on ESPN. Normally, I wouldn’t worry about a slow start from a stud pitcher so long as an injury didn’t appear to be a factor (no apparent injuries with these four). And that’s especially true...
