Raise the Jolly Roger!:
The Pirates finished off a sweep in Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon, and will carry all the momentum in the world back home to Pittsburgh for Tuesday’s win-or-go-home Wild Card game. Of course, we’ve seen that momentum can shift with one bad inning or one swing of the bat, and almost no starters were a part of Sunday’s entirely meaningless game, but it was still cool to see the Pirates complete a great weekend on the road. With the victory, the Pirates finished the regular season 94-68, good for the third best record in the NL and fifth best in baseball.
The Pirates used “the B-squad” for this one, but it did not matter. Brandon Cumpton did a heck of a job in another spot start, tossing five shutout innings of two-hit ball. Cumpton finished with a 2.05 ERA for the year over 6 games (5 starts) and 30.2 innings – extremely impressive work from the rookie who has certainly forced his way in to starting rotation conversations next season.
Jordy Mercer had the highlight of the afternoon w...

Pirates 2nd baseman Neil Walker was 7 years and a month old when Sid Bream of the Braves beat a Barry Bonds throw home in Game 7 of the 1992 NLCS. As a 28-year-old, he helped his hometown team finally break a 20-year streak of sub-.500 baseball since that game. And it didn't end there, as Walker and the Buccos clinched a playoff spot, showing the improvements made in the 2013...
Tweet With the new wildcard format in the MLB Playoffs, the wildcard teams get one game to give their best effort and head to the divisional series. In the NL, that matchup will go down Tuesday night between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds. Since there’s only one game, it’s the time that teams […]
Pittsburgh Pirates centerfielder Andrew McCutchen gave the franchise a brief scare on Monday when a ball hit him in the head during batting practice.
The MVP candidate was shagging fly balls when an unnamed teammate distracted him. McCutchen says when he turned his head a ball off the bat of Jordy Mercer hopped off the ground and caught him around his right ear.
With the wild card game approaching us at terminal velocity, we're getting some news about how the Pirates will build their roster tomorrow (remember: the wild card game is considered its own round of playoffs, so the winner can reshuffle before the NLDS). Tom Singer up first:
#pirates will go with 9-man pitching staff in WC game: Liriano, Cole, 7-man pen.
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle had a vision when he replaced John Russell three years ago.
Hurdle believed he could help lead the moribund franchise back to the playoffs. The vision will come to life on Tuesday night when the Pirates host the Cincinnati Reds in the NL wild-card game at PNC Park.
Pittsburgh won 94 games during a remarkable regular season, securing the club...
Clint Hurdle has made a major impact on the Pittsburgh Pirates since choosing to manage them at the start of the 2011 season. He's created a new atmosphere in the clubhouse, replacing the mundane, defeatist spirit left behind by John Russell, with a loud, energetic voice of optimism. With a group as young as the Pirates, that type of message can go a long way. Especially if...
Liriano has been dominant at PNC Park this season
The 2013 edition of the one game National League wild card round is set to take place tomorrow night at 8:07PM. This is the second year the new playoff format has been introduced and this year features the Cincinnati Reds visiting PNC Park, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. These two teams play out of the NL Central and a third...
In watching Sunday's regular season finale, I couldn't help but think back to March and April and think about how far things have come for this Pirate team in the last six months. In spring training, I was really down on the team because I thought that they were in line to waste another year of Andrew McCutchen's prime, ticking a year closer to 2018 without really competing...
Hundreds of Pirates fans stood, twirled their towels and chanted "Let's Go Bucs!" as Jay Bruce hit a grounder for the final out, setting up a playoff game in Pittsburgh.
Baseball, this time.
Neil Walker hit two of Pittsburgh's six homers -- its biggest power surge in six years -- and the Pirates clinched home-field advantage for the NL's wild card playoff...
Pirates (92-68) at Reds (90-70)
1:05 PM–Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati
With two games to go, the Pirates have finally been eliminated from NL Central contention. Today, they will set out to accomplish the one goal remaining in the regular season: home field on Tuesday night. They can wrap it up with a win today and make Game 162 a meaningless scrimmage...
Today is the last day of Major League Baseball's regular season. It is the end of baseball for the fans and players of at least 19 (and maybe 20) of MLB's 30 teams. It is not the end for the Pittsburgh Pirates. In fact, the Pirates have done everything that they could in this past week, and so they've got home field advantage for Tuesday's wild card game locked up...
Six months. 182 games. For the Reds, 1,511 innings played; for the Pirates, 1,505. A season, a marathon, complete.
And yet, the legacies of those long, arduous seasons, all come down to one. One game. One moment. One chance.
Both the Reds and the Pirates will be teetering on the plank in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night when they face off in the NL Wild Card Game –a sudden death, winner...
Where most saw misery and chaos, Clint Hurdle saw something else entirely.
The day Hurdle took over as the Pittsburgh Pirates manager in December, 2010, he spoke about electrifying the city. He preached optimism then went out and practiced it every day while talking about a vision that went far beyond returning a moribund franchise to respectability.
It's why Hurdle isn'...
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle confirmed the team is ready to put right-hander Jason Gilli back into the closer's role. Grilli, 36, missed a little more than six weeks with forearm discomfort. Since being placed back in the closers role Grilli has notched three saves, giving him 33 on the season. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko spoke with Grilli recently.
Hey, whatta ya know? The Pirates scored some runs for A.J. Burnett. One more win and the Pirates are guaranteed their first home playoff game since 1992. I’m gonna leave this right here. It’s an early one so you get a lineup in the preview. Starling Marte 7 Neil Walker 4 Andrew McCutchen 8 Justin…
