Kevin Correia pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Garrett Jones homered and the Pittsburgh Pirates won consecutive games for the first time in four weeks, beating the Atlanta Braves 5-1 Tuesday night. A day after being eliminated from the NL East division title race, the wild-card Braves rested several regulars and shuffled players in and out of the lineup throughout the game. Atlanta will host the NL wild-card game Friday. The Pirates (79-82) tied for their most wins in a season since their North American major professional sports record streak of 20 losing seasons began in 1993. The 1999 Pirates went 79-83. Starling Marte had three hits and scored twice for Pittsburgh, which previously won two straight games Sept. 4-5. The Pirates faded in the second half, ending their run at a playoff spot. A free agent in the offseason, Correia (12-11) perhaps made his final start after two seasons with Pittsburgh, matching a career high in wins each year. He allowed six hits and on...

Pirates Notebook: Correia’s Final Start as a Bucco?

Image Courtesy: Pittsburgh Pirates Kevin Correia walked off the mound with two-outs in the seventh inning to a warm applause from the home crowd at PNC Park. The right-hander held the postseason bound Atlanta Braves to just one run in what is likely his final start as a Pittsburgh Pirate. “I don’t think about any contract stuff or where I’m going to be at until after my last...

Chipper Jones' final regular season at bat ends with a hit

The finish to the last regular season of Chipper Jones' career ended the same way it started: with a single. Jones pinch hit in the sixth inning of Wednesday's Braves finale with the Pirates, and on the first pitch he saw from AJ Burnett, he sliced a single into right field. Jones would score later in the inning, the final run scored of his career. Atlanta's season isn...

Braves fan’s sign ‘I skipped chemo to see Chipper’ (Picture)

How big of a deal was Chipper Jones’ last weekend for regular-season action at Turner Field in Atlanta? Enough to make one Braves fan claim they skipped a chemotherapy session to watch the franchise legend play his last regular-season game at home for the Braves.Chipper Jones’ retirement tour has been a huge deal all season with the former MVP receiving gifts at nearly every...

Braves fan 'skipped chemo' to see Chipper

Chipper Jones was making his final regular season appearance at Turner Field this past weekend against the Mets, which meant that it would be the last opportunity for many Braves fans to see the beloved third baseman. Needless to say that there were more than a few people who scraped and sacrificed to make their way to the stadium to watch Chipper play one last time, but guaranteed...

Jones singles in finale, Braves top Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The storybook ending for Chipper Jones would have been putting a fastball into the Allegheny River. At age 40, however, Jones doesn't try to mash the baseball so much as massage it. Instead, the Atlanta Braves third baseman had to settle for bookending his 19-year career with pinch-hit singles. Jones rapped an A.J. Burnett pitch to right field in his final...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Atlanta Braves – Game 161

I hope the Pirates sweep the Braves.  Not because I want their record to improve.  At this point that doesn’t matter.  Mostly because I can’t stand the Braves or that d-bag Chipper Jones.  I want the Chipper Jones retirement tour to go bad.  I want his career to end on a sour note. I know, [...]

One-game wild-card playoffs: Dramatic, but fair?

By sometime Friday night, either Chipper Jones will be out of baseball or the defending World Series champion Cardinals will be out of the playoffs. One and done. A pair of wild-card matchups - St. Louis at Atlanta, then Baltimore at Texas - to decide which teams advance to the next round. Part of the new, expanded postseason format, where 162 games, six months of grinding and...
