James McDonald pitched his first career complete game, Garrett Jones hit one of Pittsburgh's three home runs and the Pirates won for the fourth time in five games, 9-1 over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night. McDonald (6-3) continued his breakthrough season by allowing one run, six hits and no walks with five strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 2.19. He has allowed one run or fewer in nine of his 14 starts this season. Jones had an RBI single in the first inning and a two-run homer that made it 8-1 in the seventh. Pedro Alvarez added a shot that traveled an estimated 435 feet to right-center two batters later. Rod Barajas had a two-run homer in the sixth. Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen came up a home run short of the cycle, scoring two runs and driving in three. The surging Pirates have won seven of their past eight series and four consecutive series at home. They moved within two games of first-place Cincinnati in the NL Central. Justin Morneau had two hits for the Twins...

Taking care of business…in style

The Pirates did what they were supposed to do, cruising behind their ace to a big win over a bad Twins team. They did so in extremely impressive fashion, however, and won their second straight series (and seventh out of eight). The victory gets the Bucs back to three over .500, within two of the division, and within one of the wild card. James McDonald was phenomenal yet again. Remember...

6/20 MiLB Recap: Gerrit Cole makes AA debut

Everyone but West Virginia in action today. Indianapolis 10, Gwinnett 2 – Daniel Cabrera started and gave up 1 run over 5 2/3 innings. Duke Welker and Daniel McCutchen each pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Chris Leroux gave up 1 run over 2/3 of an inning. Gorkys Hernandez was 1 for 3 with 2 walks. Anderson Hernandez went 3 for 6. Jeff Clement was 2 for 5. Yamaico Navarro...

Big week for the “Big 3″ pitching prospects

While the Pirates played well this week in a series win over the Twins, there was more good news in the organization down on the farm. The system’s top three pitching prospects (not including the still-unsigned Mark Appel) all pitched very well–two of them in debuts at a new level. Last night, Luis Heredia started for short-season State College. Heredia is 17 years old, which...

Waiver Wire: Pedro Alvarez, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates

I can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m telling you to pick up Pirates third baseman Pedro Alvarez. Call me crazy, but the way he’s playing now makes me hope he can be of benefit to your fantasy team. Plus, if you’re currently a cellar dweller, what do you have to lose? Alvarez got off to a very slow start this season, but, unusually, has gotten out of his slump. He...

Burnett’s bunt (and pitching) defeats Detroit

The Pirates grabbed hold of an early lead on Friday night and hung on to it the rest of the way, defeating the Tigers 4-1 in front of a sellout crowd at PNC Park. A.J. Burnett won his seventh start in a row–the longest such streak by a Pirate since Dock Ellis. Burnett went six scoreless and allowed just two hits (although he walked three) while striking out four. After A.J. worked...

Pirates 4, Tigers 1

A.J. Burnett pitched six shutout innings to win his seventh consecutive start and the Pittsburgh Pirates won for the fifth time in six games, 4-1 over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night. Burnett (8-2) allowed two hits and three walks and struck out four to extend his streak of starts that resulted in victories to the longest for a Pirates pitcher in 38 years. Doc Ellis won eight...

Game 69: Pirates 4 Tigers 1

One of the things that I've really liked about the last few games for the Pirates (and if it wasn't already clear, I've liked quite a few things) is that the Pirates have been playing opponents that have made mistakes, and the Pirates have seriously cashed in on them. Against the Indians, Asdrubal Cabrera booted balls all over the field on Saturday and Sunday and the...

McDonald’s first career complete game gives Pirates series win over Twins

The Pirates put together a beautiful game tonight on all sides.  From James McDonald’s complete game to the 3 Pirates homers, the pitching remained one of the best in baseball while the offense came alive.  In fact, the Pirates have scored the 4th most amount of runs in Major League Baseball this month. JMac pitched [...]

Six Questions with Clint Hurdle

Today, in replacement of my regular weekly post on just Rod Barajas, I have a special treat for all of our wonderful TiGO fans and readers.  I was fortunate enough to interview Clint Hurdle this week via e-mail.  He answered my questions today and gave me some great insight on our favorite players (Rod, Clint [...]

Beating the bad ones

I'm going to go more into this in the morning, but the path to the Pirates being a respectable team this year might not be any more complicated than just beating bad baseball teams. That's easier said than done, of course, particularly if the team in question might be considered a bad baseball team, too, but the point is that if the Pirates are going to do something surprising...
