The Pittsburgh Pirates have officially received right-handed pitcher Eliecer Cardenas from the Atlanta Braves, completing the trade between the two teams last month that sent outfielder Matt Diaz back to Atlanta.
Diaz was acquired for a “player to be named later,” and that player is Cardenas.
Cardenas, 23, pitched in both AA and A+ this season.
In 40 A+ appearances (56.2 IP) as a reliever, Cardenas recorded a 0.79 ERA with a 1.059 WHIP. He recorded seven saves and struck out 75 batters while walking just 29.
That solid A+ season didn’t translate to much AA success unfortunately. Cardenas pitched 3 AA innings in 5 appearances, ending up with a 27.00 ERA and a 7.00 WHIP. Fortunately, it was a very small sample size.
