The Pirates have claimed Hisanori Takahashi off waivers from the LA Angels. The lefty reliever will report to Pittsburgh in a day or so, at which point the Bucs will make a roster move to clear a spot for him.

Takahashi is a 37 year old from Japan in his third big league season. He’s 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA this season, but was better in his first two (3.61 in 2010 with the Mets and 3.44 in ’11 with the Angels). His WHIP (1.17) and strikeout rate (8.8 per 9) are encouraging, and I like that he’s lefty. I’d still rather see the Pirates show some faith in their young arms from AAA (Justin Wilson, Bryan Morris, etc.) but I’ll certainly take Takahashi over Chad Qualls. (I’m assuming that’s who he’ll replace.) If Takahashi struggles, he’ll basically be irrelevant in a week once rosters expand for those guys (I hope).

The Pirates don’t need to take anyone off the 40-man to add Takahashi, who fills the final spot. Again, they’ll need to take someone off the 25-man once he reports.
