Even Roberto Clemente hats couldn’t keep the Pirates from getting shutout 6-0 to the Brewers last night, a game that started 12 hours after the Bucs got home from Monday’s game in Chi-Town that started at 11:30…P.M. Having Chad Qualls and Tony Watson still on the roster didn’t help much either. AJ Burnett started off pretty sloppy but he buckled down and ended up giving the Bucs a very good chance of staying in the game. Burnett put 2 runners in scoring position in the first put got out of the jam. He loaded the bases in the second and with only 1 out, he got out of the inning only giving up a run. After the Brewers scored, Burnett faced 8 batters without giving up a hit. Smallball killed the Bucs the rest of the night. A flare to center, a bunt single and a base hit in the sixth made it 2-0 Brew Crew. The bullpen took over after the sixth…and just made things worse. Watson faced 2 batters to lead off the seventh and gave up a hit and Qualls replaced him to face the final four batt...

Brewers steal their way to 6-0 win

Final: Brewers 6, Pirates 0 WP: Yovani Gallardo (16-8, 3.59 ERA) LP: A.J. Burnett (15-8, 3.64 ERA) The Brewers were eight for eight in stolen base attempts, including three by Ryan Braun as they ran their way to a 6-0 shutout victory in game one of a pivotal three game series. A.J. Burnett started for the Pirates and allowed just two runs over six innings, but Milwaukee’s Yovani...

Owner supportive of Pirates' Huntington, Hurdle -- for now

The Pittsburgh Pirates have collapsed during the final two months for the second straight season. Though owner Bob Nutting says he isn't happy about it, he also doesn't seem inclined to do anything rash. "We're all frustrated by and upset with the performance and seriously looking at what do we need to do both to finish the year appropriately and make sure this...

Pirates Notebook: Pirates See Record Drop to .500

On July 28th after sweeping the Houston Astros on the road, the Pirates were sitting at a season-high 16 game over .500 and just two games behind the National League Central leading Cincinnati Reds. However, since then, the club has taken a nose dive. After being defeated 3-1 to Milwaukee on Wednesday at PNC Park, the Pirates saw themselves drop to 74-74 on the season. Not since...

Why the Pirates Always Limp to the Finish

Yes, we collapsed in the second half, but if we get some pitching help in the offseason, we could contend next year. #talklikeapirateday— Ruben Bolling (@RubenBolling) September 19, 2012We can fairly well predict that the Pirates are not going to make the playoffs this year, for the 20th straight season. They still have a fighting chance at their first winning record in two decades...

Brewers' pitchers look primed for big things

For 26 straight innings, the Milwaukee Brewers' pitching staff hadn't allowed a single run. It was a magnificent feat for a pitching staff that struggled at times with its starters and struggled even more times this season with its bullpen. But for 26 innings, the Brewers had been practically unhittable. It took until the ninth inning of Wednesday night's game against...

Brewers have endured lots of twists and turns

MILWAUKEE Imagine for one moment that it's July 26 the trade deadline closing in and you're standing next to Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin. He's on the phone with Anaheim general manager Jerry DiPoto discussing a potential trade that will send Brewers ace Zack Greinke to the Angels for three prospects, including shortstop Jean Segura. He hangs up...

Brewers hope to sink Pirates for good

MILWAUKEE Despite standing with the same record (74-72), both back by 2.5 games in the battle for National League's second wild-card spot -- both led by NL MVP candidates in Ryan Braun and Andrew McCutchen -- the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates couldn't seem to be any more different heading into Tuesday's start of a three-game series. Twelve games under .500...

Welcome back to .500, Pirates

Remember about a month ago when the Pirates’ collapse was in full swing but some yinzers were still clamoring about how the Bucs might not make the playoffs but they’d still snap the streak? Would love to hear from those guys now after the Pirates lost 3-1 to the Brewers and have hit the .500 mark for the first time since June 2. They’re 2-8 in their last 10, 7-18 in their...

Fantasy baseball must starts: Tuesday September 18th

What two all stars must be avoided while a forgotten all star should be rostered. Value plays: Pittsburgh Pirates – They still consider themselves alive in the race for the final playoff spot in the NL, and a date with Yovani Gallardo should improve their chances. If you subtract 4 reserves and Pedro Alvarez, the current Bucco’s are batting .403 against the Brewers ace, having...

Brewers 3, Pirates 1

Marco Estrada pitched seven scoreless innings and rookie shortstop Jean Segura hit a double and triple Wednesday night as the surging Milwaukee Brewers stayed in contention for a postseason berth with a 3-1 victory over the fading Pittsburgh Pirates. Estrada (4-6) allowed three hits and retired the last 10 batters he faced in improving to 4-1 with a 1.23 ERA in his last six starts...

SURPRISE: Bucs play AND win

Checked last night’s Pirates game at 8:30: rain delay. Checked the game again at 9:30: rain delay. Checked one last time at 10:30: rain delay…decided to finish watching the Falcons defense do what the Steelers could only dream of against Peyton Manning. Seriously though, the Pirates and Cubs actually played last night? Who starts a game after almost a four-hour delay? First...
