The Pirates are giving manager Clint Hurdle a one year extension (plus an option for 2015), according to the Trib’s Rob Biertempfel. Hurdle’s original deal was set to expire after the upcoming season. Hurdle’s tactics constantly drive us nuts and he certainly shares some of the blame for the team’s second-half collapse in both of his seasons as the skipper, but his popularity within the organization (which is pretty apparent) has him on firm ground for now. He does deserve credit for partially turning things around, as his vocal and upbeat mentality presence seemed to help spark the club early on in 2011 and 2012. That said, managers aren’t paid all that much in baseball terms (Clint has been making a bit more than $1M/year) so if the Bucs flop again this year, the Pirates could easily send Hurdle out despite this new extension. Teams typically do deals like this to avoid having a “lame-duck” manager, and if the Pirates don’t perform well (meaning at least .500, in my opinion) this year, GM Neal Huntington will almost certainly be fired, and one extra year on Hurdle’s contract won’t keep Clint from losing his job as well.
