Here is a GIF of the botched rundown/blown call by the umpires #Mets http://t.co/gQ9NFbDI3t — #ImWithTowels (@MetsKevin11) June 28, 2014 Pirates outfielder Josh Harrison is one hell of a baserunner. On Friday’s game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets, Harrison displayed one of the most amazing base running plays you’ll ever see. In the 10th inning of a tie game, Harrison was on the run-down after Gregory Polanco hit a ground ball to Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia. That’s when Harrison put on a show. Most players give up when they’re on the run-down, Harrison didn’t. What a play. The post Pirates’ Josh Harrison’s amazing base running; beats run-down appeared first on The Sideline.

When Being Out Of The Baseline Doesn't Mean You're Out

((HT: MLB.com))The Pittsburgh Pirates Josh Harrison had a full evening last night...But the biggest part was this activity on the base paths that angered Mets manager Terry Collins before it was over with...Your browser does not support iframes. Now, we know that when you run, you can take a little creative license in the base paths...

Who gets the better end of Pirates-Angels, Grilli-Frieri challenge trade?

Being a major league closer can be a volatile gig. The latest example of that was demonstrated by the Pirates and Angels, who swapped struggling relievers on Friday. Pittsburgh sent Jason Grilli to Anaheim in exchange for Ernesto Frieri, a somewhat surprising deal given the success each pitcher had as his team’s closer last season. Grilli racked up 74 strikeouts in 50 innings,...

Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole activated for start Saturday

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the 15-day disabled list, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.  Cole will start Saturday afternoon against the New York Mets. It's official: Cole activated, Cumpton to Indy. #pirates— Rob Biertempfel (@BiertempfelTrib) June 28, 2014#495484061 / gettyimages.comCole was placed on the...

Jason Grilli, Ernesto Fieri Swapped In Change of Scenery Deal

The Los Angeles Angels and Pittsburgh Pirates traded closers Jason Grilli and Ernesto Fieri in a move that both teams hope will help both players. Grilli had served as the Pirates’ primary closing option for most of the past two seasons before being removed from the role recently. After a solid 2013 season, 33 saves, Grilli struggled with his command this season, and was 0-2...

Worleymania

The Pirates kick off what might be their most important homestand of 2014 tonight against the Mets. Their next 10 games will be at PNC Park, and they’ll be against the Mets, Diamondbacks, and Phillies. I’d like to see seven wins, at least, from the Pirates on this homestand. Vance Worley makes his third Pirate start tonight. His first two starts have gone 13 1/3 innings, holding...

Pittsburgh Pirates send Grilli to Angels for Frieri

After losing the Pittsburgh Pirates’ closer role one week earlier, Jason Grilli on Friday was dealt by the club to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. In a swap of composed of closers, the Bucs acquired Ernesto Frieri in return. Mets 5, Pirates 3

Gerrit Cole‘s return to the rotation was not a triumphant one, as he had a very poor outing to end the Bucs’ recent string of strong starting pitching efforts. Cole’s velocity was fine, but he wasn’t locating – especially his secondary stuff – and suffered two very long, miserable innings to start the game. It was 5-0 Mets pretty quickly, and although Cole was able...

Pirates Trade Jason Grilli to Angels for Ernesto Frieri

Two teams with struggling relievers came together on Friday, agreeing to a trade that will give each pitcher a fresh slate in a new environment.  The Pittsburgh Pirates watched 2013 All-Star closer Jason Grilli struggle this season while the Los Angeles Angels watched their closer, Ernesto Frieri, fall apart several times on the mound.  Both players have a chance now to re-establish...

Pirates Trade Former All-Star Jason Grilli To Angels For Ernesto Frieri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran Jason Grilli from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday for fellow reliever Ernesto Frieri in an attempt to solidify the back end of their bullpen. The 37-year-old Grilli has struggled with his command this season and is 0-2 with a 4.87 ERA and 11 saves in 22 appearances. But he was pivotal to the Pirates’ resurgence last...

Game 79: Pirates 5 Mets 2

In the third inning, it felt like the Pirates were on the verge of breaking this game open a little bit. The score was tied at one, but the Mets had almost no luck against Vance Worley besides Lucas Duda’s solo homer, while the Pirates put at least one runner on base in every inning against Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was obviously struggling with his control. With Pedro Alvarez up...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. New York Mets – Game 82

One game over .500 at the halfway point.  Could be worse I guess.  Could be an assload better too. The Pirates are just 2.5 games out of the last wildcard spot.  That sounds pleasant but they have three teams directly in front of them. The good news is it starts to get a bit murky after the Pirates. The Marlins are collapsing, they are 4.5 out.   No one really expects the Marlins...

Pirates Swap Grilli for Angels Reliever

Grilled Cheese is no longer a satisfying late inning menu option for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The swift fall for Jason Grilli from all-star closer to exiled is now complete. Yesterday the Pirates sent Grilli to the Angels for reliever Ernesto Frieri. Much like Grilli, Frieri is a struggling reliever that was yanked from the closer role. Frieri has blown three saves this season and...

Game 80: Pirates 3 Mets 2

This is the sort of game that I feel strange about offering much of an opinion on because I was watching Durham and Indianapolis play tonight (I will write a little bit about the minor league game, probably on Monday and not in the way that I usually do, but we’ll get to that in time), but it also feels odd to let such an exciting win go entirely unmentioned. I suppose what I...

MMO Game Recap: Pirates 3, Mets 2 (11 innings)

The Mets dropped a tough one on Friday night at PNC Park, falling to the Pirates by the score of 3-2 in extra innings. After a very wild Vic Black allowed a one out walk to pinch hitter Clint Barmes in the bottom of the 11th and then Josh Harrison launched a walk-off RBI double to give the Bucs a dramatic win. It was the third straight loss for the Mets who are now in last place...
