Final: Reds 5, Pirates 4 WP: Johnny Cueto (6-3, 2.63 ERA) LP: Brad Lincoln (3-1, 2.40 ERA) SV: Aroldis Chapman (6, 0.00 ERA) Brandon Phillips homered in the 2nd and the Reds added four more in the 4th inning thanks in large part to a 3-run double by Ryan Ludwick to put the Pirates in a 5-0 hole. In the 8th inning, the Pirates finally broke through, but it was too little, too late. Neil Walker picked up a 2-out, RBI single to score Rod Barajas and Andrew McCutchen followed that with a 3-run home run. Unfortunately, they could not push in another run because Aroldis Chapman was just lights out in the 9th inning to shut the door. Doug Slaten pitched three scoreless innings of relief to help keep the Pirates in the ball game. Amazingly, he has not given up an earned run since his first outing of the year for AAA-Indianapolis way back on April 7th. Pedro Alvarez had a pinch-hit single in the 8th inning to contribute to the Pirates’ rally. He was 0 for his previous 18 at-bats. My guess is...

Game 55: Pirates 4, Reds 5

After the Reds lost the first game of the series, I was a little nervous that the Pirates might really sweep the series and come into a tie for first. But now the Buccos will have to hope for another series to do that, since the Reds won last night, 4-5. Johnny Cueto started for the Reds, and it was Good Cueto this time. He went 7.2 innings with 3 runs (earned) on 6 hits and a walk...

Is Aroldis Chapman The Best Pitcher In Baseball?

Chapman, warming up before a spring training start in Scottsdale Is Aroldis Chapman the best pitcher in baseball? According to the F12 Rating, he is. Chapman has a 32.960 F12, almost two full points ahead of the second ranked pitcher, Gio Gonzalez. Dusty Baker and the Cincinnati Reds have made the hard-throwing Cuban their closer, and Chapman has excelled.  His fastball famously...

Daily Brief: Down early to the Pirates

Last Game The Reds dropped the series opener to the Pirates in spectacular form, 8-4. Homer Bailey, who previously owned the Pirates, got totally lit up. Next Game Tonight Johnny Cueto (5-3, 2.54 ERA) goes out for revenge. He’s facing off against Brad Lincoln (3-0, 1.04 ERA). Cueto’s been good and Cueto’s been bad the last few starts, but we really need good Cueto tonight...

Cueto dominant in Reds win over Pirates

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Johnny Cueto allowed only six hits over 7 2-3 innings on Wednesday night, and Ryan Ludwick drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Reds won for the 12th time in 17 games and extended their NL Central lead over Pittsburgh to three games. The second-place Pirates lost for only...

Daily Brief: Consistency in Pitching

Last Game The Reds pulled the series even yesterday by beating the Pirates 4-5. Johnny Cueto got the win and Brandon Phillips redeemed himself a little with a 2-for-4 night that included a home run. He’d gone 0-fer and left 7 on base the day before. Next Game Tonight is the rubber match, with Mike Leake (2-5, 4.95 ERA) defending against Kevin Correia (2-5, 4.19 ERA). Don’t let...

Reds sink Pirates, 5-4

Word is this guy's alright. The Redlegs were able to wash away the bad taste left in their mouths after a loss in game one of the series against the Buccos by holding on for a 5-4 victory. With the win, the good guys move to 30-24 on the season while dropping their divisional rival to 28-26. By using the trusty blueprint of strong starting pitching, timely...

Chapman falters, Dickey shines

Last week ended in controversy with a no-hitter upon causing everyone to unlock their asterisks, replay arguments and prototypes for robot umpires. NBA fans that were following the Eastern Conference Finals listened intently between Twitter rants. Here in Los Angeles, fans are praying for a quick end to the NHL Final. Their playoff beards are hardly comfortable while playing sand...

What You Need to Know: Friday, June 8 by Daniel Rathman

The Thursday Takeaway Somehow, some way, somewhere, someday, someone was going to plate an earned run against Aroldis Chapman. But if I had told you that it would be the Pirates—and not just any Pirates, but the two Pirates with the lowest batting averages in that day’s Pirates starting lineup—you might have questioned my sanity. The Reds’ relief ace came into last night’s...

Stay hot

The Pirates' figured out one of their long-time Cincinnati nemeses last night when they tagged Homer Bailey for a bunch of runs, tonight they try to get their second win against Johnny Cueto in eight days. They drew some walks off of Cueto last Wednesday, taking four in his seven innings, and eeked out a 2-1 win behind AJ Burnett. Instead of Burnett tonight, the Bucs send Brad...

Champan's streak ends in Reds' loss to Pirates

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Michael McKenry drove in the first earned run allowed by Aroldis Chapman with an RBI double in the 10th inning on Thursday night, rallying the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. McKenry's sacrifice fly put Pittsburgh up 4-3 in the seventh, but closer Joel Hanrahan (3-0) blew a save for only the second time this season, giving up...
