The Pirates made another move this afternoon, signing left-handed starter Erik Bedard to a 1-year, $4.5 million deal.

I don’t have a lot of time for a long post, but I am a big fan of this pickup. Bedard is a very good pitcher – possibly the best on the current staff – when healthy. The problem is that he’s ridiculously injury-prone. Still, it’s a very worthwhile risk for the Pirates to take, in my opinion. $4.5M is a pretty good price, so it’s not the end of the world if he gets hurt or flames out. Again, though, if he’s healthy he will be as good as or better than Charlie Morton or Kevin Correia. Suddenly, turning down Paul Maholm‘s option looks a lot more reasonable.

The Bucs also signed catcher/1B Jose Morales to a minor league contract. He’ll be thrown into the giant mix of mediocre catchers the Pirates already have, and I doubt he’ll start the year with the club. The Nate McLouth deal also became official today – he signed for $1.75M. To clear space for McLouth and Bedard, Jason Jaramillo and Pedro Ciriaco were designated for assignment.
