The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed infielder Jared Goedert to a minor league deal, according to Ken Rosenthal. Goedert spent seven years in the Cleveland farm system, splitting the 2012 season between Double-A and Triple-A. In Triple-A last year he hit for a .279/.331/.460 line in 326 at-bats with 14 homers. Goedert turns 28 next season, and hasn’t played in the majors yet. He will likely serve as depth in the upper levels, taking the place of someone like Anderson Hernandez, who recently departed as a minor league free agent.

As Wilbur Miller pointed out today after the Jared Goedert signing, the Pirates have re-signed a few of their players from last year. Baseball America announced some re-signings yesterday, with the key players for the Pirates being Anderson Hernandez and Stefan Welch. Both players were in the organization in 2012. Hernandez had a major league Spring Training invite last year, and...
Major League Baseball announced the 2012 Silver Slugger award winners, and Andrew McCutchen was named one of the winners. The award was the first Silver Slugger for McCutchen, and he became the first Pirate to win the award since Jack Wilson in 2004.

Just a couple of small things over the last few days…
Andrew McCutchen won a Silver Slugger award (which goes to the best hitter at each position, or the three best for outfielders) tonight. Jay Bruce and Ryan Braun joined him in the NL outfield. Cutch is the first Pirate to win a Silver Slugger since Jack Wilson did so in 2004. (Amazingly, Jack Flash has a Silver Slugger to his...
After the Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up their 2012 season with a 4-0 loss to the Atlanta Braves at PNC Park, owner Bob Nutting said that he was angry and frustrated by the final outcome of the season. On July 28, the Pirates sat at a 58-42 record — a season-high 16 games over .500 — and just three games behind the Cincinnati Reds for the National League Central. They held a...

GM Greg Smith and Kyle Stark a.k.a. "hoka hey." The Pirates website has an article titled "Pirates...

Pittsburgh Pirates owner Bob Nutting is upset about the way his team finished the season, but insists the franchise is heading in the right direction.
Well, it shouldn’t surprise you one bit that this news just so happened to break on the one day people are least likely to think about sports. Bob Nutting met with the media on Tuesday and announced that nobody in the Pirates’ front office will be fired, but also said that the much-discussed military-style training drills in the Bucs’ minor league system will come to an end...
Buried in yesterday's election news, Bob Nutting made an appearance yesterday afternoon to give a vote of semi-confidence to Neal Huntington and his front office for 2013, basically saying that while he was upset by the collapse that he thinks that controversial military-style training needs to be toned down, that he thinks the front office deserves another year to build on the...
