The 2012 San Diego Padres: Epitome of Boring Baseball

In past years the Padres have been accused of playing “boring” baseball. The primary rationale behind this unflattering characterization was the lack of scoring in games involving the Friars. Perhaps some fans disapprove of low scoring baseball but not necessarily this guy. I can get behind a clean, well-played, 2 – 1 loss as easily as I can with coming up on the short end...

Padres' Suppan happy to be back in majors

Jeff Suppan says he is concentrating on the now and not caught up in the resurrection of his career. Right. "He's relishing every moment," Padres manager Bud Black said of Suppan Sunday afternoon after the 37-year-old right-hander suffered the first loss in his impressive comeback. After three starts with the Padres, Suppan is 2-1 with a 1.69 ERA. He dropped...

Padres' Richard not pitching as expected

Left-handed starter Clayton Richard says he is healthy following shoulder surgery that ended his 2011 season after 18 starts. But Richard is struggling. He lost a fifth straight start Friday night in Philadelphia and some of his numbers are concerning. In 2010, Richard went 14-9 with a 3.75 ERA and allowed 16 homers -- or one every 12 2/3 innings. Last year, before his...

MLB: Domestic violence charge delays Padres plans to call up prospect

A domestic violence charge during spring training reportedly has kept the San Diego Padres from calling up top infield prospect Everth Cabrera. The shortstop was arrested in March, the team confirmed to UT-San Diego late Thursday night. He has a pre-trial hearing for May 17. Cabrera is hitting .325 this season with 14 stolen bases for Class AAA Tucson. If not for the charges...

After getting blown out in the first game, the Padres fought back and won beat one of the best pitchers in baseball to tie the series Saturday. The Padres saw a couple streaks end on Sunday when Jeff Suppan lost after winning his first two starts...

Padres 2, Phillies 1

Edinson Volquez pitched six effective innings, pinch-hitter Jesus Guzman drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly and the San Diego Padres beat the Philadelphia Phillies and ace Roy Halladay for the second time this season, 2-1 Saturday night. Euro 2012: Sweden coach puts wins ahead of style

Sweden coach Erik Hamren wants his team to play an attack-minded, possession-based and eye-pleasing style of football. At the European Championship, though, he's more than willing to sacrifice style for results. Hamren has brought a different philosophy to Sweden since taking over the national team two years ago, replacing an often stodgy, defensive-minded 4-4-2 system with...

Daily Friar 5.12.12

I'm going to start this out by saying that I hate Phillies fans. There's no way around it, they are obnoxious and annoying. That being said, the Phillies fan base is something that Padres fans should look at. I'm not saying we should emmulate their attitude, but it would be nice to eventually get to the point where we could sell out every home game no matter the time...
