Last night, the Yankees did not play, yet they gained a half-game on the Rangers who lost to the Rays. The loss was the Rangers’ 12th in their last 14 games. An unbelievable cold stretch at the most inopportune of times. Here’s to hoping they don’t start playing any better. And here are how the teams in contention fared yesterday:
Rays: 6-2 win vs Rangers. Alex Cobb strikes out 10 over 8 innings.
Rangers: 6-2 loss vs Rays. Matt Garza continues to be an underwhelming Ranger.
Indians: 7-1 loss vs Royals. Scott Kazmir gets loss for Tribe.
Royals: 7-1 win vs Indians. James Shields strikes out 10 Indians in only 6 innings.
Wild Card Standings
WC 1 Rays 82-67 +1
WC 2 Rangers 81-68 —
3 Indians 81-69 .5 GB
4 Orioles 79-70 2 GB

You may know by now that this MLB season will be Yankees closer Mariano Rivera’s last season, and he’s going out with a bang. Mo is ranked third in the AL with 43 saves and is sporting a 2.30 ERA.
Teams around baseball decided to send him out in style as well, showering Rivera with gifts during his last road series with each team. Each gift was a lovely gesture, and a novel...
That said, the biggest beef the Rangers have should be with themselves. As I’ve said numerous times previously this is a mentally weak team whose record from the very beginning was little more than fool’s gold. I also think their coach lacks the stomach (or the brains) to make hard (read, UNCOMFORTABLE) decisions. His two-season long love affair with a mediocre player Dave Murphy...
The Red Sox saw Mariano Rivera for the last time in a regular season game at Fenway Park on Sunday, and there was no shortage of moving tributes to the closer.
Although many of the Fenway Faithful will be glad their team no longer has to contend with Rivera, most can’t deny the class, composure and and success he has had over the past 19 seasons. Dick Flavin, Fenway Park’s unofficial...
This weekend could not have gone worse for the Yankees. That's not hyperbole. It's the simple truth. After they'd fought so hard to win 3 of 4 against the Baltimore Orioles and jumped both Baltimore and Cleveland in the Wild Card race, the Yankees went into Fenway Park and got swept. The pitching was the culprit in all three games, sinking the Yankee offense into...
If it were earlier in the season, or if he were still a member for the Chicago Cubs, Alfonso Soriano would likely be taking a few games off to rest his ailing right right. However, he's now a member of the New York Yankees, a team in the midst of a playoff chase, and Soriano, who's dealing with a thumb injury, told reporters -- including Bryan Hoch of MLB.com -- that he...
Prior to getting slaughtered 9-2 to complete a sweep of the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox honored Yankees closer Mariano Rivera.
It was a classy affair at Fenway Park so big props to the Red Sox organization for going above and beyond to honor Mo.
In case you missed the ceremony, here it is in full:

New York Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez has left Sunday night's game against the Boston Red Sox because of a tight right calf.
Vernon Wells pinch hit for Rodriguez in the fifth inning.
Rodriguez was 1 for 2 with a single in the game, which is the Yankees' last in Boston this year.
New York entered the night trailing AL wild-card leaders Oakland and Texas by 2...
The title says it all. I excluded seasons before 1976 because pitchers made way too many starts before then. If I went way back, I would run into seasons like Old Hoss Radbourn‘s 1886 where he won 27 and lost 31 (maybe his arm was worn out from throwing more than 2100 innings over the previous four years). I previously wrote an article on the 5 worst seasons of 120+ RBI. 20+ wins...
John Sterling likes it when the Yankees hit home runs, and Alex Rodriguez has given him a hand in that regard many times over the years.
Whether it’s a chance for Sterling and broadcast partner Suzyn Waldman to glory in all things Yankees or just an opportunity for Sterling to whip out his home run spiel, the long ball can get Sterling pretty excited — sometimes too excited....
I bet he purposely pissed on the floor too
You have to give it to the Canseco brothers, if anything, they love the game of baseball. At least that's the image they portray. Jose Canseco may be the Godfather of performance enhancers, but he did start the process that has cleaned up the game, the likes we have never seen. Ozzie Canseco was never the player his brother was. He was drafted by the New York Yankees in the...
The Yankees entered Friday night’s series opener in Boston in the thick of the wild card race. They left Fenway Park on Sunday night three games out of the last playoff spot, dropping their season record against Boston to 6-13 after a weekend sweep in which they were outscored 22-7.
New York is now 79-71 with just 12 games remaining in its season. Injuries and ineffective pitching...
The Red Sox completed the sweep of their three-game set against the Yankees Sunday night taking the finale of the season series 9-2.
The Sox finish the season series 13-6 against the Yankees winning the series for just the second time since 2005. The 13 wins match the most against the Yankees in a season by any team since the 1976 Orioles went 13-5.
The win combined with the...
The New York Yankees got beaten badly in Beantown.
Mr. Met making a funny.
It was a three game sweep that made Yankee fans everywhere question whether this 2013 team is even good enough to compete if they happen to slide into the postseason, which would be via Wild Card berth only.
That is because the moment the Red Sox finished off the Yankees last night, they eliminated the Bronx...
In yet another example of just how idiotically awesome some people can be, a guy clad only in his skivvies stormed the field during Tuesday’s tilt between the Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers at Tropicana Field. But this guy’s unconventional entrance revealed that he clearly understands the concept of showmanship, as he flipped over […]The post Underwear-only clad idiot disrupts...
