LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) -- Rick Porcello pitched a spring training-high four scoreless innings, and Alex Avila had three RBIs to lead the Detroit Tigers to an 8-5 win over the Houston Astros on Monday. Porcello, competing with several others for one of the remaining openings in the Tigers rotation, allowed three hits and struck out six. He lowered his spring ERA to 3.38. Potential Tigers closers Brayan Villarreal and Al Albuquerque each struck the side. For Villarreal, it was his first appearance since his family in Venezuela was the target of an armed kidnapping attempt on Friday. None of his family members were harmed. Jared Cosart started for the Astros and allowed three runs in two innings. He also walked four. The Astros walked nine and committed two errors.

Detroit Tigers rumors: Porcello peaking interest

The Detroit Tigers and Rick Porcello trade rumors are likely to crank into overdrive in the coming weeks. It’s kind of becoming the Tigers equivalent of what the Diamondbacks experienced with Justin Upton. The elongated nature of Upton’s trade talks probably won’t replicate in Detroit but Porcello’s name has been a hot topic ever since the Tigers overpaid for the return of...

Rick Porcello Trade Talks

According to ESPN (my Scorecenter App alert, to be precise) – the Rangers have inquired about Rick Porcello. This makes sense to me for a number of reasons. 1) The Rangers just lost Martin Perez for several months with a fractured forearm. Perez was slated to be their #5. This is a team who has already shelved Neftali Feliz and Colby Lewis to begin the season. 2) As we’ve discussed...

Various Tigers rumors (Porcello, potential closers, etc.)

According to ESPNNewYork.com’s Adam Rubin, Rangers scouts were on-hand for Rick Porcello’s four innings of shutout ball Monday and inquired what it would take to land him.  The Rangers are looking to sure up their fifth starter spot.  With Porcello and Drew Smyly performing well thus far in camp, it would appear that one of them (more likely Porcello) will be dealt before Opening...

Aaron Westlake Blasts Home Run in Detroit Tigers’ Spring Training Loss: Video

Aaron Westlake, the Detroit Tigers’ 22nd round pick in 2010 out of Vanderbilt, has not had many opportunities to prove himself thus far in spring training. He took advantage of one of his few chances on Sunday, though, blasting a home run in Detroit’s loss to the Braves. Your browser does not support iframes. Westlake hit .249 with nine home runs and 69 RBI for Class A West Michigan...

Tigers' Villarreal glad family safe after robbery

Brayan Villarreal was sitting at a Red Lobster restaurant when he was texted by his mother that there was danger at his home in Venezuela. Villarreal was stunned to find out that his father, mother, and 14-year-old brother had been robbed at gunpoint in their own home and held captive last Friday. None of them were harmed, but his father and brother were tied up. Villarreal was...

Justin Verlander says “I suck.”

Justin Verlander just admitted something for the first time. The ace of the Detroit Tigers has accomplished a lot in his career.  M.V.P and Cy Young Awards.  Being the starting pitcher in an All-Star game.  Pitching numerous times in the World Series.  Oh, and don’t forget two no-hitters. One of the things that the Tigers [...]

Max Scherzer Sharp, Bruce Rondon and Doug Fister Rocked in Detroit Tigers’ Loss

Max Scherzer’s first spring start went off without a hitch. The same cannot be said for Bruce Rondon’s latest relief appearance. Rondon, who may be coughing away his shot at the Detroit Tigers’ closer role, served up a pair of runs in his one inning of work during a 6-1 loss to Atlanta. Rondon coughed up a solo home run to Tyler Pastornicky, then allowed an RBI double — just...

Verlander says he would accept a gay teammate

During an interview with CNN's Carol Costello, Detroit Tigers pitcher, Justin Verlander, said that he would "absolutely" accept an openly gay player on his team. "I wouldn't mind it," Verlander added. While some players in the major professional sports have reservations about having a gay teammate, it's almost a breath of fresh air to hear one...

Tigers' Hunter learned to lead

LAKELAND, Fla. -- How does a leader become one? They do so by admiring other leaders and aspiring to pick up their torch. In Torii Hunters case, those leaders ranged from his mother, Shirley, to his Minnesota Twins teammate, Kirby Puckett, and a revered opponent, Ken Griffey, Jr. And at every turn, ever since he was a young boy attending the Indiana Street Baptist Church in...
