The Mets (31-26) fell to the Phillies (34-23) in extra innings tonight at Citi Field. Bobby Parnell (2-1, 2.25) was tagged with his first loss of the season after Chase Utley lifted his second solo shot of the night beyond the right field wall.

Mets Pitching
Mike Pelfrey: 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K
Sean Green: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K
Pedro Feliciano: 1.0 IP, 0 H
Francisco Rodriguez: 2.0 IP, 1 H
Bobby Parnell: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB

Notables
Luis Castillo: 2 for 6, 1 RBI
Alex Cora: 1 for 5, 2 RBI
David Wright: 3 for 5, 1 R
Omir Santos: 3 for 5, 1 R

The Good:
  • The Mets pitching was great once again tonight, despite a couple of errors in the seventh inning that did the Mets in.
  • David Wright is now hitting .354 on the season, while Beltran is hitting .342. Yikes.
  • Mike Pelfrey is undoubtedly a solid number two pitcher. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just crazy.
  • Despite a depleted lineup, the Mets are hanging with a completely healthy Phillies batting order. Even when they lose by a run, that's still impressive.
The Bad:
  • Sean Green is charged with a blown save, despite allowing zero earned runs to score when he came into the game with the bases loaded an no outs. How does that happen?
  • The Mets left 16 men on base, although three were a gimme because the pitcher was up with two outs and the bases loaded. No excuse for the others, though.
The Ugly:
  • Not really ugly, but Jayson Werth saved the game for the Phillies with his phenomenal diving catch to rob David Wright of extra bases in the tenth inning. Wilson Valdez would have scored easily, as there were two outs.
  • The umpires blew yet another call tonight, ruling Carlos Beltran was out at first base in what turned out to be an inning-ending double play, cancelling out a runner that scored. The Mets then lost by one run.
Mets' Player of the Game: Mike Pelfrey (5)

This one doesn't sting that bad, but the Mets still should have won it. I'm not going to blame this one on the umpires, even though they did blow another call that cost the Mets a run early on. Nonetheless, the Mets had plenty of opportunities throughout the game to take control, yet they didn't.

Oh well...time to take the rubber game. By the way, this is why we signed you, Redding.
