Ivan Nova (5-4, 2.93 ERA) continues to impress and takes on the equally impressive Jered Weaver (7-5, 2.87 ERA) in the third game of the four against the Angels. Nova has an impressive six consecutive quality starts since July 5, posting a 1.60 ERA over that span while striking out 44 batters in 45 innings. The righty struggled in his last start against the Angels, allowing six runs on July 15, 2012. In his last outing, a no decision against the Tigers, Nova allowed just one run in seven innings. “I’ve been pitching really good,” Nova said after. “I’ve been feeling really good with all of my pitches, working both sides of the plate to righties and lefties and getting quick outs.” Nova hopes to extend his quality start streak to seven and the Yankees hope to win their fourth game in a row.
Given an early five run lead, Weaver pounded the strike zone and pitched efficiently against the Indians in his last start, giving up two runs and walking none in seven innings. The Angels’ ace has a 1.49 ERA in his last five starts.
After hitting soft toss and off the tee on Monday, Derek Jeter took another step on Tuesday, taking batting practice for the first time since he strained his right calf. “It’s a day to day thing,” Jeter said. “They told me I’m taking BP, so I’m taking BP. Tomorrow, I don’t know. I know I’m going to Tampa on Thursday, that’s all I know.” In addition to taking batting practice, Jeter also took ground balls and did some light running. It is still unknown when Jeter will be activated, he said he is not sure if the Yankees will ask him to go on a rehab assignment.
Notes on the game.
Robinson Cano is one home run shy of 200th for his career.
Angels shortstop Erick Aybar left Tuesday’s game with cramping in his left calf. He said he was fine after the game.
First pitch at 7:05 PM (EST) on Yes.

Alex Rodriguez may not have a lot to say to Major League Baseball but behind closed doors, A-Rod is allegedly a regular chatterbox when it comes to giving New York Yankees teammate Robinson Cano career advice.
A-Rod has reportedly been spreading the word behind the scenes that Cano should give pause about re-signing with the Yankees and explore the free-agent market.
Deadspin has suggested that MLB has considered using instant replay for calls that aren’t balls or strikes. The question becomes, is this good or bad for baseball? I will take an objective approach to this question, although it will be tough for me since I am a baseball purist.
Let me begin with a quote. “Baseball is only a game. True. And the grand canyon is only a hole in...

Note to radio producers: If you’re going to have a former Major League Baseball player on your program to talk about a sensitive topic such as performance-enhancing drugs, it might be a good idea to vet them, first. ESPN Radio 104.5 in Albany, N.Y., failed to do just that, and got burned in a pretty spectacular way Tuesday.

According to the NY Daily News, there was one course of action that MLB could have taken that Alex Rodriguez would not fight. Mainly because it was a course of action that Rodriguez and his team birthed.
Rodriguez was reportedly prepared to accept an 80 to 100 game suspension from MLB. And as soon as the suspension was up, he would immediately retire. Other than the light suspension...

The New York Yankees might have just found one way to rid themselves of Alex Rodriguez — the editing room.

On the front page of Monday’s Boston Herald, the first thing that jumps out to the reader is most likely a picture of President Barack Obama golfing on Martha’s Vineyard accompanied by the clever headline “Puttering About.” But there was also a less noticeable advertisement above the Scott Brown headline on the right that is worth mentioning.
The ad takes a jab at New York...
In another example of a failed move for the Los Angeles Angels, the club has demoted starting pitcher Tommy Hanson to Triple-A. The move comes after battled injuries and suffered through poor performances. Considering the Ryan Madson signing, the Sean Burnett trade, and others, the move to designate Hanson fits in with the current path of the Angels' organization.
If the Yankees manage to somehow keep their flickering postseason hopes alive the band leader will be Hiroki Kuroda.
With Mariano Rivera unavailable after flushing three straight save opportunities and the Yankees’ bats controlled by Angels starter Garrett Richards Kuroda hurled the Yankees to a 2-1 victory in front of an announced Yankee Stadium crowd of 37146.
