KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Maybe the Detroit Tigers have to worry more about a team further down in the division standings after sweeping the club that is right behind them. The Tigers have won four straight heading into Monday night's road matchup with a Kansas City Royals team seeking its first six-game win streak in two seasons. Detroit (35-26) extended its lead in the AL Central to a season-high 5 12 games after sweeping Cleveland at home over the weekend. All three Tigers starters won as they posted a 2.37 ERA. Kansas City (28-32), meanwhile, has turned in a 1.00 ERA during this five-game run. The Royals haven't gained much ground and are 6 12 games behind Detroit. This surge for Kansas City began when Jeremy Guthrie (6-3, 3.66 ERA) ended a four-start winless stretch by giving up one run over six innings in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Minnesota. The right-hander improved to 4-1 with a 2.78 ERA in five starts at home - where he is limiting hitters to a .205 average. Guthrie went 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA in two home starts against Detroit last year. Miguel Cabrera is 9 for 26 with two homers against him, Jhonny Peralta is 7 for 21 and Torii Hunter is 8 for 26. Cabrera is a .366 hitter at Kansas City, where he batted .417 in nine games last year. Guthrie will be backed by a bullpen that has not allowed a run in 17 2-3 innings in the Royals' past six games. Kansas City was locked in a scoreless affair Sunday against Houston before scoring twice in the eighth inning for a 2-0 victory. Manager Ned Yost felt his relievers would give his club every chance to break through after Luis Mendoza departed after seven innings. "I'm fully stocked," Yost said. "It doesn't matter how long this game goes, I've got enough pitching to wait it out." The Tigers and Royals split two games in Detroit from April 24-25 in their lone previous 2013 series, with Kansas City's bullpen tossing 6 1-3 scoreless innings. Although the Tigers are second in the majors with 5.2 runs per game, they have had trouble scoring with Doug Fister (5-3, 3.27) on the mound. Detroit has no runs over Fister's last 16 1-3 innings. He will start the opener of this three-game set after taking a shutout into the ninth inning Wednesday before surrendering all three runs in a 3-0 defeat to Tampa Bay. "There always seems to be one guy who takes the brunt of these stretches - we go a bunch of games where we can't get him any runs - and Doug is getting that right now," catcher Alex Avila said. The right-hander is 2-3 with a 3.97 ERA in seven starts against the Royals. Salvador Perez and Eric Hosmer have combined to go 4 for 19 against Fister, but are surging now. Perez is 8 for 18 during this win streak while Hosmer is 7 for 13 over his last four contests. Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar, hitting .191 over his past 32 games, was given Sunday off after playing in the first 59 games.

Miguel Cabrera tosses gum at Ryan Raburn after HR (GIF)

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera jokingly tossed his gum at Cleveland Indians left fielder Ryan Raburn as his former Tiger teammate was rounding the bases after hitting a home run in the fifth inning of Sunday's game at Comerica Park. It happened in the fifth inning as Raburn broke up a no-hitter by Tigers pitcher Jose Alvarez with a home run to left field which...

Max Scherzer is ripping that shadow to shreds

Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers has made twelve starts and he has not lost a game. Not only has he not lost a game, he does not look capable of losing a game. He has pitched in the shadow of Verlander for so long that he has always been considered the other guy. He might just be the guy now. He has gotten better every season in the last four and now Scherzer is in an elite class...

Cabrera tosses gum at opponent

Apparently, Miguel Cabrera is a fan of history. We all know about the story he wrote in the record books last season, winning the AL Triple Crown. And he may have had the best game of this season, too, with his monster Sunday nighter in May . But this past Sunday, he missed out on history and did what any loyal teammate would do -- he threw gum at an opponent. Tigers pitcher Jose...

Tigers draft Verlander's little brother

The Detroit Tigers are giving Justin Verlander's brother another shot to become a professional. Detroit selected Old Dominion outfielder Ben Verlander in the 14th round of the Major League Baseball draft on Saturday. The Tigers drafted him in the 46th round three years ago out of high school, but he chose to go to college. ''It wasn't just one of those scenarios...

Tigers, Cabrera deny ongoing contract negotiations

DETROIT It has to happen. The Detroit Tigers have the most-valued commodity in baseball, Miguel Cabrera, under contract through 2015. Cabrera is only 30, and the day will come when the club begins the process of locking him up for the majority or entirety of his playing career. According to a report by ESPN.coms Jayson Stark, that time could be now. Stark wrote in his column...

Choosing ASG pitchers? Take your pick

At least Jim Leyland has one easy decision with his American League All-Star pitching staff: Mariano Rivera -- leading the league with 23 saves in the final year of his historic career -- is as close to a no-brainer pick as one could imagine. Leyland won't have Rivera start the game as a tribute, as has been suggested by some. He would, however, like Rivera to get the ball with...

Royals riding rally BBQ sauce to wins

Teams will try anything to earn a win including BBQ sauce. For the Kansas City Royals the secret is in the bottle. Is “Billy’s” BBQ sauce the key to the Royals wins? It does “Hit it a TON” but then again the Royals were playing the Houston Astros recently so maybe it is not all in the sauce.

No Shortage of Baseball Bloodlines In 2013 MLB Draft

The major league baseball amateur baseball draft has come and gone and there was an emphasis on family bloodlines. Time will tell if the selections were made because of the talent potential due to their family genes or if the team simply felt a loyalty to the former player. Regardless, here are the bloodlines that were drafted this past weekend. Luke Farrell- Son of John Farrell...
