Verlander can’t be Verlander every night… But when he isn’t it would be nice if his offense can pick him up. Well that’s exactly what happened Friday night as Detroit’s big guns in Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder combined for three home runs and five RBIs in a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. In what would be decent outing for just about any other pitcher in the League, Verlander had some trouble with his command walking four in six innings. However the Tigers ace was still able to strike out six and allow a very manageable three earned runs. Nick Markakis had Verlander’s number in the series opener tagging him for two doubles before Matt Wieters’ two run home run in the 5th to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead. The very next inning though Prince Fielder quickly got those runs back hitting a two run home run to tie the game at three. The duo of Cabrera and Fielder however continued to give Orioles pitching nightmares as Fielder went yard once again with a two run shot (scoring Cabrer...

Game 2012.119: Orioles at Tigers

63-55, 2nd place, 2.5 games (that’s what you get for taking a day off) behind CWS, 1 game behind WC There’s been a lot of talk as of late regarding Miguel Cabrera’s MVP candidacy. In fact, it seems as if the local papers have received an edict to write about it daily. And they make strong arguments in his favor. But MLive’s Josh Slagter made a fantastic point in an article...

Leyland: Playing third pumps Miggy up

Miguel Cabrera this season has been more openly demonstrative than ever before. He will pound the water jug like a bongo when frustrated and make pointed comments to teammates when the need arises. Cabrera also is much looser, happier and has developed a whole set of handshakes and interactive hand jive with teammates. Neither Cabrera nor first baseman Prince Fielder have a name...

More missed opportunities as the Tigers fall to Baltimore 3-2

Rick Porcello was good enough to earn at least a no decision Saturday night, unfortunately though his offense didn’t take advantage of the opportunities presented to them. Porcello, who’s been largely inconsistent this season went six strong...

Prime Nine: Milwaukee Brewers

Baseball is very cyclical in nature. Teams that are ultimately successful build through the farm system until they reach critical mass. Then, they begin to sign free agents and make trades with that farm system to get the last piece. The Brewers developed Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder, Corey Hart, and Rickie Weeks. They developed pitchers like Yovani Gallardo. Then. the...
