The New York Yankees and free agent Travis Hafner have a deal in place, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News. Jennings expects an official announcement to come within the next 24 hours. Hafner, 35, hit just .228 last year with 12 homers for the Indians and has had health issues in each of the last five seasons. However, his price tag is cheap, and he could put up some decent numbers at Yankee Stadium with the short porch in right field, of course, if he stays healthy. After losing postseaon hero Raul Ibanez to the Seattle Mariners, Hafner will most likely slide in and be the main DH against right-handed pitching. He could also give Mark Teixeira a day off at first base if need be. “Pronk’s” best year came in 2006, when he hit .308 with 42 homers and 117 RBIs. He may not be the player he once was, but if he can put up half those numbers, the Yankees would take it.
