Cesar Hernandez, Image- Jay Floyd Signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent at the age of 16 in 2006, Cesar Hernandez swiftly proved himself as a capable prospect that had quite a future in baseball. Last year, the young Venezuelan was honored as a Triple-A All-Star and made his big league debut. This year, he’ll be doing everything in his power to earn another chance to compete at the top level of the sport. Hernandez, a switch-hitter, made his professional debut with the Phillies’ Venezuelan Summer League team in 2007. In two seasons there, he tallied a .296 batting average with three home runs and 45 RBI in 114 games. He followed that effort with a campaign in which he batted .267 with five doubles and a triple in 41 games for the rookie level Gulf Coast League Phillies in 2009. The following season, with the short-season Class A Williamsport Crosscutters, Hernandez was voted as the Most Valuable Player of the club by his teammates and was a New York-Penn League All-Star. And the role of Cole Hamels will be played by...

If the Phillies somehow win the World Series this season (hey, stop laughing!), stories will abound of how the Phillies proved age is just a number and how the core group once again asserted their dominance and how Ryne Sandberg created a winning atmosphere, yada yada yada. But the real reason for another parade will be the names David Buchanan, Jeff Manship, or Sean O’Sullivan...

Philadelphia Phillies rotation competition: a closer look

Philadelphia Phillies rotation competition: a closer lookAs things look now Cole Hamels will likely miss the first month of the season, meaning that after the first two weeks of the season the Philadelphia Phillies will need a fifth starter for the rotation.  Johnathan Pettibone would likely be the first choice, but he has been sidelined this spring with a shoulder injury.  There...

Are the Phillies as bad as they look?

Spring Training results are meaningless. The statistics mean nothing. There is nothing to see here. At least those are the things we are told. But what if miserable Spring Training results follow a miserable season and do not even look up to snuff to reach the miserable win projections the computers have in store for them in 2014? Maybe they are not so meaningless. The Phillies of...

Over/Under- Roberto Hernandez

We wrap up the 2014 Philadelphia Phillies preview of the starting rotation today with the guy in the 5th slot, Roberto Hernandez.Pros: He was signed to only a 1 year deal, hasn't balked since 2011 (really, there aren't many positives with him, so I'm reaching). Cons: Hasn't been decent since he was named Fausto Carmona back in 2010, low strikeout rate, gives up lots...

Phillies' Mike Adams encouraged following second bullpen session

The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for someone to be the set up man this season behind Jonathan Papelbon.  They signed Mike Adams prior to last season to be that man, but injuries limited him to 28 games.  Antonio Bastardo, who missed the last 50 games in 2013 while serving a suspension, could emerge as the man come opening day, should Adams not be ready.   Adams was...

After playing to a tie yesterday against the Twins, the Phillies (2-8-2) and the Braves play each other just five days after playing to a 2-2 tie themselves.
