The Reds drafted Jay Bruce 12th overall in the 1st round of the 2005 draft. Bruce was a big riser in the 2005 draft after establishing himself as a real draft prospect in 2004 before joining the top group of prospects in 2005 with an outstanding senior season. He drew comparisons to Larry Walker due to his size, swing and arm strength. After the draft, Bruce signed quickly for $1.8M and the Reds sent him to the Gulf Coast League to play for their rookie ball team. The GCL is a notorious pitchers league, but Bruce more than held his own as he hit .270/.331/.500 in 136 plate appearances with 11 walks and 31 strikeouts. He was impressive enough that the Reds promoted him to Billings for the final three weeks of the season. Over 81 plate appearances he would hit .257/.358/.457 with 11 walks and 22 strikeouts.
