Click here for my live report on the start. Carlos Mesa hit his third homer of the year, putting the Marauders up 2-1 at one point in the game. Willy Garcia hit a double and a triple. His double was off the upper part of the wall, and was a few feet from going over the fence. Adrian Sampson had a rough start, giving up runs in his first two innings, including a towering home run in the fifth. He settled down and allowed just those two runs in five innings, with six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. That allowed him to pick up his first win and first decision with the Marauders. First Pitch: Taking the Jordy Mercer Approach With Tony Sanchez

Tony Sanchez has a .918 OPS in Indianapolis. The one thing we can take away from the Jordy Mercer situation is that the Pirates plan to have him as the primary shortstop in 2014, or at least the top candidate for the job. We hope that’s the situation. Otherwise it really makes no sense to get Mercer adjusted to the majors in the short-term as a utility player. But I think that...

First Pitch: The Pirates Should…But the Pirates Will…

There is no reason to have John McDonald on the roster. Photo Credit: David Hague I was talking with David Todd on Twitter earlier today, discussing the potential Jordy Mercer move. Yesterday on the Bucs Dugout podcast, David talked about what the Pirates will eventually do, and noted that he would rather see the Pirates send Mercer down to receive regular playing time in Triple...

Early Preview of the 2013 International Signing Class, Pirates Not In On Top Names

On Baseball America this afternoon, Ben Badler posted his list of Ten International Prospects To Watch. It is a subscribers only article, but don’t worry if you don’t subscribe, yet want to know who the Pittsburgh Pirates are linked to among that group, he doesn’t mention them once. In most years, that has been the case with the Pirates. There have been a few exceptions recently...

Pittsburgh Pirates Activate Neil Walker, Option Jordy Mercer

The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated second baseman Neil Walker from the 15-day disabled list as he has healed from the laceration of his right index finger. To make room for Walker, the Pirates have optioned Jordy Mercer to their Triple-A Indianapolis minor league affiliate. The post Pittsburgh Pirates Activate Neil Walker, Option Jordy Mercer appeared first on FFLockerRoom ...

Tony Sanchez Sent Back to Indianapolis

Tony Sanchez was sent back to Indianapolis. The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t end up needing Tony Sanchez. The catcher was brought up on the taxi squad yesterday, which gave the Pirates until 10:10 AM this morning to make a decision on him. Sanchez was added mostly as an option in case the Pirates had to play a double header today. Russell Martin wouldn’t have been able to go, and...

Neil Walker activated from disabled list, Jordy Mercer demoted

Neil Walker is back from the disabled list today, just in time for the Pirates' seven-game homestand against the Brewers and Astros. As a result, Jordy Mercer will be demoted back to Indianapolis to make room for Walker. John McDonald will remain on the roster.  This is what John McDonald has done in 34 plate appearances as a Pirate: two hits (one double), three walks, one...

Francisco Liriano’s mantra: Slow and lethargic wins the race.

I am guessing that Major League Baseball players think that going to the minors to rehab can be somewhat of a nuisance. They probably have guys on the minor league team asking for photo opps, autographs, tips…etc. Still players need to get back into the swing of things so they are forced to play a quick stint in the minors. For Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Francisco Liriano he made...

Game 39: Pirates 3 Brewers 2

There were plenty of things to like in this game (a partial list: Jeff Locke was strong again, Bryan Morris and Vin Mazzaro both turned in solid relief performances and have both been generally pretty good besides one bad outing apiece, Clint Hurdle used both Jason Grilli and Mark Melancon appropriately in a tie game (and I know that many managers do this in extra inning games at...

Number 22 gives Pirates win number 22

Last night, everything went the Brewers’ way.  Tonight, the Pirates caught their share of breaks and did what they needed to get to the 12th inning and win, 4-3, on Andrew McCutchen’s walkoff homerun.  The win was the Pirates’ 22nd of the year; it’s fitting that number 22 won the game. Early on, tonight’s game…

Pirates 4, Brewers 3

A walk off homer by Andrew McCutchen gave the Bucs a thrilling 12-inning win over the Brewers on Tuesday night. Cutch had hit two balls very well earlier in the game only to see them die at the warning track, and he had suffered a similar fate in Monday’s game. When he flew out to the right-center field wall in the seventh, though, it showed that he was ready to go off – he...

Brewers 5, Pirates 1

The Pirates played a miserable baseball game on Monday night as a lifeless offense and disastrous defense led to a 5-1 loss to the Brewers. The Pirates made three errors, had several poor defensive plays that were not technically ruled errors, and allowed six stolen bases. The combination of A.J. Burnett on the mound and Michael McKenry behind the plate basically invited the Brewers...

Pirates 3, Mets 2

You have to feel good about the Bucs taking winning on a day their spot starter went against an ace on the road, and that’s exactly what happened on Sunday afternoon as they finished off a series victory in New York. Phenom Matt Harvey had a solid afternoon, but was far from dominant. After the Bucs fell behind early, they answered with a home run in the third inning by Clint Barmes...

Anthony Rizzo’s Extension is a Good Guide For Starling Marte

Anthony Rizzo’s extension is a good guide for Starling Marte. Photo Credit: David Hague On Saturday I wrote about how the Pittsburgh Pirates should extend Starling Marte, giving a price guide for a potential deal. Last night the Chicago Cubs extended first baseman Anthony Rizzo on a seven year, $41 M deal with two option years. Coming into the season Rizzo had 0.168 years of service...
