In a report to the New York Post, Mike Puma writes, “The Mets certainly have not given up on Lucas Duda, who still is viewed as part of the club’s long-term solution.”  Puma goes on to state the following about Duda:

“The key will be getting a more consistent Duda next year and finding a position for him. As The Post reported last week, Ike Davis could be used as trade bait this winter to help address other needs in the lineup. If Davis is dealt, Duda would become the starting first baseman.

But if Davis were to return, that would mean sticking with Duda in the outfield and hoping for the best. The organization is not inclined to deal Duda, believing his potential outweighs what he could bring back in a trade.”

I can definitely see Duda’s trade value being low. He was sent down to Triple-A Buffalo in mid July after hitting just .241 with 12 home runs and upon his demotion, reports suggested, Lucas was upset.  However, according to Puma, “Once Duda’s outlook improved, the organization began seeing glimpses of the same player whom some Mets officials believed was capable of hitting 30 homers this season.”

Let me start by saying, I don’t believe the club will trade Ike in the off-season. During an in-game interview with the SNY booth last week, general manager Sandy Alderson stated the following when asked if the team would consider trading Davis:

“For us to trade a guy who has 30 home runs we better know where the next 30 are coming from.” 

And so, I find it hard to believe that they will trade Davis. As I told E.J. on The Happy Recap radio show last night — which you can listen to by clicking here — if the Mets can improve at both center and right field, I have no problem with Duda returning as the clubs left fielder.  That said, I agree with Terry Collins who stated the only way the 26-year-old will be able to stay in the everyday lineup is if his power numbers improve.

“There’s a lot of guys in this league who are very dangerous, and you look up and they might be hitting .230 but they also have 35 or 40 homers. We know Lucas is a better hitter than what he’s done this year. He’s had a tough year. We saw last year a guy who uses the field to hit, can hit lefties, so we’ve got to get him back.”

Duda is hitting  just .239 with 15 homers in 393 at-bats for the Mets this season and since his return on August 26th, ‘The Dude’ is batting .241 with three home runs and 13 RBI:
