Todd Jones was a relief pitcher that pitched for eight different teams in his fifteen-year career, which spanned from 1993 to 2008. Most of Jones’ stats look fairly pedestrian. He had a career won-loss record of 58-63, had a career ERA of 3.97, and only made one All-Star team. Photo Credit: AP Photo/Paul Sancya The one thing Jones was good for was saves, and boy, did he have a lot of those. Jones amassed 319 saves in his career, 14th on the all-time saves list. In 2000, his lone All-Star season, Jones, then a member of the Detroit Tigers, tied Red Sox closer Derek Lowe for the most saves in the AL (an impressive 42). All of Jones’ other accomplishments also came while he was a Tiger. He is the team’s all-time leader in saves, went to his only World Series as a member of the Tigers in 2006 (his 2nd stint with the club), and represented team USA in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. It’s pretty difficult to be a stud and not to be on the USA team with a generic name like Todd Jones. Jones was also known for writing a column for Sporting News while he was still playing. I loved the column, as it gave me an inside perspective of what goes through the mind of a major league baseball player. In 2008, Jones announced his retirement in one of his columns. Jones now lives in Alabama with his wife and two kids. His will be remembered as a standup guy (with an amazing mustache), who displayed talents both on the field and on his laptop. -Hollenberg
