Marlon Byrd went 4-for-4 with a tie-breaking three-run homer in the seventh inning, and Julio Borbon hit two solo shots as the Rangers outslugged Cleveland 11-9 to win the first game of a doubleheader.
Borbon's second homer sparked a three-run ninth that gave the Rangers enough cushion to hold off the Indians, scored scored runs in each of the final six innings. Five of those came against starter Tommy Hunter, and Travis Hafner had a solo homer in the seventh off Neftali Feliz.
The rookie allowed both runners he inherited in the sixth two score, and gave up three hits and a walk. The walk ended a streak of 18 consecutive batters retired, and the run ended a 20 1/3-inning scoreless streak.
Despite the less-than-dominating outing, Feliz earned his first big-league victory thank to Byrd. The center fielder ripped his 16th homer in the top of the seventh to break a 5-5 tie.
