Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo left his start after getting hit on his pitching hand by David Murphy's line drive Sunday in Cincinnati's 7-2 loss to the Texas Rangers. Preliminary X-rays detected no break. Arroyo allowed three runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings before being led off the field by a trainer. Lance Berkman homered and drove in three runs for Texas, while Alexi Ogando pitched six scoreless innings. Craig Gentry tripled in the first and scored on Berkman's sacrifice fly. Berkman's fourth-inning homer landed in the Rangers' bullpen beyond the right-field fence with Gentry aboard. Ogando, set to be a starter this season after spending last year in the bullpen, limited the Reds to three hits. He walked one and struck out five, throwing 56 strikes in 82 pitches.

Member of Reds coaching staff informs team he has cancer

On Sunday, Reds third base coach Mark Berry delivered some tough news to the clubhouse. The 50-year-old told the team that he has been diagnosed with cancer. “I have cancer,” Berry told reporters after the team meeting. “I know it sounds bad, the word cancer, but there are plenty of people in this clubhouse that have had it and I know people around the game who have beaten...

Ten thoughts on the current state of the Reds entering the regular season

One week from today, the Reds will be playing host to the loaded Los Angeles Angels at Great American Ball Park for their season opener. It's going to be a festive occasion full of pageantry, tradition, and dreams of what the new season may hold. Until then, the Reds still have several exhibition games left in Arizona to endure. Being that we are so close to commencement of...

Rangers 6, Reds 2

Yu Darvish gave up homers to Joey Votto and Todd Frazier but showed no problems with a stiff neck that forced him to be scratched from his previous start, and the Texas Rangers beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-2 on Saturday. Darvish gave up three hits in five innings, including the two homers. He had to miss his scheduled start last Monday. Votto's homer was his third of spring training...

The Cincinnati Reds wisely decide to keep Aroldis Chapman in the bullpen

With Cincinnati’s suits finally making a decision, Reds flamethrower Aroldis Chapman will remain the team’s closer this season. The 25-year-old Chapman (5-5, 1.51 ERA), who defected from Cuba in 2009 and signed a six-year contract worth $30.25 million with the Reds in January 2010, saved 38 games in 2012. “We made a decision on our rotation. It’s (Johnny) Cueto, (Mat) Latos...

Frazier Readies for Opening Day Start

When Cincinnati broke from spring training one year ago it appeared that Todd Frazier had landed a spot on the opening day active roster until a disappointing move sent him to Louisville right before opening day. That didn’t stop him from becoming one of top run producers for the Reds last year. Now he’s ready for regular duty at third base as the Reds vie for another trip to the postseason.

A trade, mock drafts and a podcast

The weekend was full of plenty of news. First and foremost was the Aroldis Chapman will close decision. While that isn’t minor league related, it does lead to minor league decisions. That may push a “loogy” out of their role that was present with Chapman as a starter, opening a spot for JJ Hoover. Of course, there are still plenty of reasons to believe that JJ Hoover winds...
